Gallery 210 Presents Lauren Greenfield's Feature Length Documentary, THIN
Eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia are devastating illnesses that effects one in seven women. These disorders often reflect a past trauma which leaves the women grasping onto whatever they can to feel in control; in control of their life and their own body. Such is the need for control that they are willing to give up every modicum of a normal life to have it.
THIN is a multimedia photography-based exhibition about these disorders. The project originated with an award-winning feature length documentary Lauren Greenfield directed for HBO after which she created a new body of photographic work that was recently published in a companion volume by Chronicle Books.
The film is a cinema-verite exploration that follows four women: Brittany, Shelly, Alisa, and Polly in their daily lives during the treatment at Renfrow Center, a 40-bed residential facility for the treatment of women with eating disorders. The documentary explores the process of treatment, the cycle of addiction, and the unique relationships, rules and rituals that define everyday life within the institution that is their home. The still photography continues where the film leaves off and follows these women over two years after they leave treatment and go back home to face issues of relapse and recovery. The photography includes reportage as well as portraits of 15 women, accompanied by personal testimonials and the women's art and private journals.
