In The Manner Of Smoke
video and installation work by Jerstin Crosby
Opening Reception Friday, February 19 6-10pm
Feb. 19 - Mar. 20, 2010
Gallery Hours Fri., Sat. Noon-5pm and by appointment
Jerstin Crosby's upcoming exhibition, In The Manner Of Smoke, will consist of a 3-channel video projection of a "goth" re-imagination of Seinfeld, filmed on a life-size, make-shift replica of Jerry's apartment. The loosely tied narrative draws pieces of dialogue from an incident in 1996 when Oprah was sued by Texas cattlemen as well as the little known fact that the real-life Jerry Seinfeld is an avid vegetarian. The video also features several "Kevin Bacon protest signs" that the goth Jerry, George, and Elaine almost rip apart to repair a crack in the imaginary "fourth" wall, after the actors break character.
Additionally, Crosby will be utilizing Good Citizen's billboard as a stand alone photographic public art piece, and creating a small site-specific installation inside the gallery. The billboard image is of two men with disguised faces holding a banner with "YOU CANNOT CONTROL WHAT IS WILD" sprayed on it in red letters. The phrase was left by members of the Earth Liberation Front after an arson they claimed responsibility for at an Oregon tree farm in 2001. By taking it out of context, re-enacting it in a photograph and placing it on a billboard, Crosby allows this phrase to take on new interpretations while simultaneously drawing references from Edward Abbey's fictional novel "The Monkey Wrench Gang".
