RAC Gallery: Friday, 15 January 2010
"Critical Mass Creative Stimulus" exhibition features Martin Brief, Cameron Fuller, Robert Goetz and Asma Kazmi. The four featured artists were selected from more than 60 proposals,
which were judged by Terry Suhre, director of UMSL's Gallery 210, and independent curators Shannon Fitzgerald and Dana Turkovic.
Critical Mass Creative Stimulus features installations by the recipients of the first Creative Stimulus Project, sponsored by Critical Mass for the Visual Arts (CMVA). The artists are Martin Brief, Cameron Fuller, Robert Goetz and Asma Kazmi. The exhibition runs from January 15 to February 28. The opening takes place from 5:30 to 7:30 pm on Friday, January 15 at The Gallery at RAC.
Much of Martin Brief's work deals with words and print. In the exhibition, his pieces will be based on Truisms, a series of 253 well-known sayings by contemporary artist Jenny Holzer. Fuller will exhibit a diorama, modeled after a Victorian-era taxidermy case, which incorporates fairytale elements yet uses real-world materials. Fuller describes the diorama as a "kind of cinematic world." Goetz's installation will have a musical focus, including a sculptural work incorporating guitars. Kazmi will show a video from her project "Playing Gender," a performance piece which deals with hijras, cross-dressing men, eunuchs, and hermaphrodites in India.
Critical Mass Creative Stimulus is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at The Gallery at RAC.
