SCHMIDT CONTEMPORARY ART
Stuart Arends
Olivia Lahs-Gonzales
June 12 - July 11, 2009
Opening Reception Friday, June 12, 5:00-8:00 PM
Hours: Wednesday-Friday, 12-5; Saturday 10-4
Stuart Arends will be showing work from two recent series. The A-Frames are finely milled aluminum boxes 6 x 6 x 2.5” which the artist paints in hard edged geometric formats; the Big Art pieces are much smaller wooden boxes painted more loosely in his signature style which take their name from the fact that although they are physically small they project themselves as eloquently as large paintings when given the opportunity and the proper space.
The timing is perfect for this exhibition. These particular A-Frames will eventually be heading to a museum exhibition in Italy; other works from this series will be featured in two booths at Art Basel. Other works of the same size as the Big Art pieces will be at Basel as well - but not any from this series which is very personal to the artist who is showing work from this series for the first time.
Olivia Lahs-Gonzales, well known for her photography, will be exhibiting one of her large scale photographs and a series of recent drawings which reflect her ongoing passion for the forms and energies found in the world of nature.
At times appearing quiet - just a few subtle lines of watercolor - and at other time using a variety of media in energetic bursts Lahs-Gonzales works on paper allow her hand to accomplish the same feelings and emotions that her eye has shown us for many years through the lens of her camera.
