William Shearburn Gallery: Friday, 7 September 2007
Opening Reception Friday 7 September 2007, 6 to 8 pm
Exhibition continues through 13 October 2007
Publisher Spotlight: Mixographia
William Shearburn Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of contemporary prints published by Mixographia Workshop in Los Angeles, CA. The exhibition includes works by John Baldessari, Donald Sultan, Ed Ruscha, Mimmo Paladino, Tom Wesselmann, Terry Winters, and Jorge Pardo.
Mixografia produces and publishes handmade paper prints, multiples and sculptures in all media that expand the language of traditional editions by allowing the artist greater choice. The Mixografia technique is a flexible medium that permits the artist to transfer characteristics of the painting,bas-relief or assemblage onto paper without completely abandoning the graphic feeling. These artworks directly represent the artist's original creation, maintaining the identifiable traits of the artist's work, the artist's gestural expressions and the nature of the materials used.
Philadelphia Wireman
The Philadelphia Wireman sculptures were found abandoned on a side street in Philadelphia on trash night in 1982. These sculptures-all intricately bound together with tightly-wound heavy-gauge wire-include a wide variety of found objects, including bits of plastic, glass, leather, batteries, eyeglasses, food packaging, umbrella parts, nails, aluminum foil, and children's toys. Over a thousand of these small-scale sculptures were discovered at once and while it is presumed that these works must have been discarded upon their maker's death, the Philadelphia Wireman's name, age, ethnicity, and even gender remain uncertain. Over 20 sculptures will be included in this exhibition.
