This body of work, by Kansas City artist Dylan Mortimer, explores the space between the sacred and profane. By combining elements of Christianity with Hip Hop culture, the work explores the relation of seemingly opposite things. Holy texts have often been originally
translated into "lower" class language structures in order to give access to the masses (koine Greek, vulgate Latin, etc.). This show asks: if the concepts of the bible were heard on the street today, how might they sound? Is it possible that language often categorized as profane and vulgar may cut more directly to the heart of Biblical concepts? Is it possible that the contemporary church has much to learn from Hip Hop culture? This show aims to find a balance between the secular and the sacred, between propaganda and censorship, between sincerity and sarcasm, in order to find a contemporary
expression of an exploration that has been going on for thousands of years.
