SLCC Meramec Gallery: Friday 2 March 2007

March 2 - April 13, Hirokazu Fukawa Installation

Opening Reception, Friday, March 2nd at 5:30-8pm
Artist's Lecture by Hirokazu Fukawa: March 1, 12-1 in HE: 131
Curator's Talk by Joe Chesla: April 12, 5 pm in the Gallery

Ethereal and haunting, Fukawa's installations often focus on shared systemsof communication and their failure to convey intended messages. Born in Tokyo in 1954, Fukawa studied social science at Waseda University. His later experience of the Canadian wilderness contrasted strongly with his urban life and led to new conceptual and spiritual works of art utilizing salt, florescent light, logs, mirrors, text and video monitors, among other media. His work has been exhibited at many museums and galleries in Japan, the US and Europe.

Examples of his work can be seen at www.fukawa.org

Joe Chesla is an artist and Assistant Professor or Art in Sculpture at Meramec.
