in conjunction with the Southern Graphics Conference International
Opening Reception THURSDAY, March 17, 2011
im:print publication

IMPRESS(ed) is an exhibition of prints that are made by the letterpress process and art work that has conceptual connection to letterpress. A 900-year-old printing technique, letterpress was the printing process for most book and text printing until the development of offset lithography in the early 20th century. New technology and availability of materials has given rise to an abundance of fine printing and art work using letterpress. The exhibition, IMPRESS(ed) features the work of 30 printmakers. Featured artists will include Lynne Avadenka, Robyn Awend, Amy Borezo, Inge Bruggeman, Ophelia Chong, Kathryn Hunter, Kelly Jones, Ann Kalmbach, Tatana Kellner, Emily Larned, Susan Makov, Toby Millman, and Erin Newell.

A companion exhibition titled PRINT IN/EX will also open on March 17 in the Visual Art Studios, where the Hunt Gallery is located. PRINT IN/EX will feature works from 53 art students from the University of Applied Arts Vienna/Austria, Tokyo National University of the Arts/Japan and the Fine Art College at Shanghai University/China. The exhibition will feature prints from two Exchange Portfolios created between 2008 and 2010 by art students from the University of Applied Arts Vienna on one hand and Tokyo National University of the Arts and Fine Art College at Shanghai University on the other.

A very special component of SGCI 2011 is the publication of im:print 2011 – journal for the state of current printmaking. There will be a book presentation at 7:30 PM on March 17 in the Visual Arts Studios.
