Duane Reed Gallery: Friday, 22 October 2010
Joseph Piccillo
Opening Reception Friday, October 22 from 5-8p.m.
Exhibit Ends November 27
Duane Reed Gallery presents the latest work of Joseph Piccillo. Gallery hours: Tue through Sat 10-5pm.
Joseph Piccillo's large-scale graphite canvases contrast masculine and feminine line qualities, carefully balancing strength and power beside grace and beauty. The horse and ballerina are his central motif and through his detailed graphite depictions of these elegant creatures, Piccillo captures the dynamic movement of both figures, freezing moments of strength and grace. From the definition of muscle to the veins of the neck, Piccillo moves past the ability to create life-like images and creates a moment suspended in the image. The scale of these graphite canvases alone, demonstrate Piccillo’s mastery of chiaroscuro and naturalistic modeling. Set against the rich blacks of his canvas, each pale figure commands individual attention while at the same time creating narrative dialogues among the figures. The white leaps from the canvas against the ambiguous backdrop and bright splashes of color offer an abstract quality to Piccillo’s work.
