Craft Alliance is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition Setting the Mood: The Artful Table, 6 – 8 p.m., Friday, May 21, at Craft Alliance’s Delmar gallery. Juror Bruce Hoffman selected work from emerging and established artists from across the country. These artists celebrate the handmade in dinner ware, glass ware, textiles, serving pieces and more that “set the mood” of the artful table. Of the more than 120 entries, Hoffman accepted 50 pieces to be included in the exhibition. The exhibit runs through July 11.

“I am intrigued by the table top, the art of dining and the joy of the celebratory table setting,” said Hoffman. It is as constant as apple pie. Memories of the family feast, the grand charger with the sumptuous bird is as warming as being nestled in your grandmother's arms. When Craft Alliance asked me to jury Setting the Mood: The Artful Table, I immediately said yes. Viewing the submissions was like looking at photos of old friends. The functional world has somewhat escaped me the past few years, and it was a joy to meander through the images of cups, bowls, platters and serving utensils.”

Hoffman hopes “the exhibition inspires everyone to throw a dinner party, pull out the family heirlooms, or find a craftsman you love and commission something that your grandchildren will remember as fondly as your grandmother's warm hug.”

The national and local artists in the exhibition include: John Baltrushunas, Clinton L. Berry, Jim Connell, David Jacobson, Ed Bing Lee, Melissa Lovingood, Matt Keim, Linda Lee Shapiro, Helen Shirk, Jo Stealey, Joan Takayama-Ogawa, Naomi Wanjiku and Kimberly Winkle.
