Craft Alliance Presents RE/ACTION(S)
Gail M. Brown, curator
Opening Reception Friday, May 1, 6:00-8:00pm
May 1 - June 28, 2009

Craft Alliance presents RE/ACTION(S), an exhibition of diverse works of layered ideas and unexpected forms that reflect on current social, political, personal and environmental matters. The works are exquisitely well-crafted by a daring group of emerging artists who demonstrate media exploration and acknowledge the wealth contemporary craft, creating new definitions and parameters. RE/ACTION(S), curated by Gail M. Brown, will be on display May 1-June 28, 2009.

There are 35 artists in this exhibition including Jessica Calderwood who explains that her “most recent series consists of psychological portraits that address ideas of eating, consuming, and personal obsession within the context of traditional dinnerware forms. I view the dinner platter as emblematic of our culture’s obsession with consumption as a whole. This series deals with issues of political, social and, personal importance. My hope is that the work will create opportunities for examination, contemplation, and change.” In this exhibition you will see traditional craft materials of wood, clay, silver and silk combined with the unusual elements such as resin, wool felt, steel, plastic, human hair, rubber and concrete. The artists challenge the viewer to be surprised and open to the unexpected.

Gail M. Brown is an independent curator focusing on exhibitions which share exceptional work from a national body of mature and mid-career artists and potent ideas and forms by younger makers.

Exhibiting concurrently in the Charak Gallery, Cathy Barancik :Internal Landscapes. Ms. Barancik uses found objects combined with metal, wood and other materials in her sculptures that address women's issues.
