Open Lot: Friday, 14 November 2008

Friday November 14th, 7-10pm at Open Lot.

OPEN LOT presents new found and constructed video works by Adam Cruces. Cruces acts simultaneously as autor and mediator of a new, immersive and ritualized version of Batman: The Dark Knight: "In the process of subtly manipulating (i.e. repetition through looping, extracting from the mass) the content is transformed into a hybrid, of found object and unique original. The elements are distorted into overbearing dramatic music with abstract chanting and reconstructed dialogs with unidentifiable new characters interacting with the cast of the movie. The pieces are not only a re-contextualization of the movie, but an investigation of the movie's mediated, illegitimate offspring."

Cruces bought the raw materials for his short videos from a pirated movie vendor on Canal Street. The movie-pirateer shot Batman: The Dark Knight secretly, from the hip, capturing the audience moving around and answering cell phones. The final pirate version includes filming from at least four different theaters, dubbed in three languages, and subtitled in another
three (Cantonese, Spanish, and English). Cruces embraces the confusion created by the film's pirated mediation and finds order in a fragmenting process. As the silhouettes of the pirated video's audience members blend with the darkly costumed "goons" of the original film, Cruces' repeating snippets beg for our participation. It's impossible to not be taken into the chant of "Donde esta la Policia?", and when the sequence repeats, each piece seems to take on more qualities of a well-crafted noise performance than of a cut-copy YouTube video.
