William and Florence Schmidt Art Center: Thursday, 8 May 2008
Luminous: Tom Scarff & Sandra Marchewa
Shadows of the Rock: Mary Butkus
OPENING RECEPTION Thursday, May 8, 6 8 pm
Chicago artist Tom Scarff created several light installations for our gallery, on display in conjunction with "Echo Comet," a neon sculpture for Southwestern Illinois College's new Liberal Arts building.
St. Louis's own Sandra Marchewa exhibits her fascinating resin sculptures that seem to glow from within. By combining painting techniques with unconventional materials, she creates miniature universes that inhabit an "almost living and breathing environment."
Mary Butkus, another St. Louis artist, debuts her series of photographs of Alcatraz. She states, "The island and prison were not my initial photo subjects, but the photographs evolved [to] capture the federal penitentiary … slowly going back to its natural state."
The exhibition continues through June 14, and is free and open to the public.
Free visitor parking is available in front of the Art Center.
METROLINK Exit College Station and cross the parking lot.
HOURS Tuesday - Saturday 11 am-5 pm, Thursday 11 am-8 pm, Closed Sunday, Monday, and school holidays.
SUMMER HOURS Tuesday-Saturday 10 am-2 pm, Thursday 11 am-8 pm, Closed Sunday, Monday, and school holidays.
