Bryan Pease, owner of Concrete Ocean Contemporary Gallery, approached Colin Shaw and Dale Wilke about creating a show combining their very different styles. To better unify the two artists, Shaw’s emotionally charged, narrative works were abandoned in favor of the non-objective vernacular Wilke employs in his palette-focused, mood pieces. Additionally, Wilke’s preferred larger format was downsized to compliment Shaw’s typically smaller working scale.

The challenge of how to merge the two artist’s distinct approaches into a show that would not jolt the eye turned into a conversation on perception and the individual. From there it evolved into the exploration of multiple realities created in the individual experience, unique from one another, yet coexisting in real time with or without depending on one another.

The artists decided upon the unique approach of assembling a list of titles before any work began, assigning each title to a predetermined size. Each artist then created his own rendering of that title separately, free of any influence of the other’s work. Upon completion, the resulting
pieces shown side by side. A unique experience will be achieved both as a group and singularly on several levels, from each artist’s initial reaction to the given title , in addition to each artist’s first experience with the other’s corresponding pieces. The show attendees will then complete the process with their perception of the collaborative presentation.

The first solo American museum exhibition of the work of Cypriot artist Christodoulos Panayiotou and Figure Studies: Recent Representational Works on Paper, a thematic exhibition of recent works on paper that reconsider traditional approaches to figuration and representation. We also kick off a new season of the Front Room with the presentation of two 1957 films by American artist Robert Breer – Jamestown Baloos and A Man and His Dog Out for Air.

Throughout the evening, a free shuttle will run between the spring openings at the Kemper Art Museum at Washington University and CAM in Grand Center. There will also be events at the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts and Bruno David Gallery. Shuttles will run approximately every 15 minutes starting at 6:00 pm, and the last shuttle will depart each location at 9:00 pm.

10denza, the Central West End's new "retail lounge" is proud to present a special exhibit: Empty City, Posters by Potter, featuring the work of Jason Potter, known for his hand-screen printed rock show posters for various national and local bands and as the drummer in St. Louis bands Left Arm and Bruiser Queen.

The exhibit kicks off with an opening reception on Friday, January 27 from 7-10 p.m. at 10denza, located at 44 Maryland Plaza. Guests will enjoy hors d'oeuvres, beer and wine, music by DJ Ryan Snowden and Bruiser Queen and poster signings by the artist. This event is free and open to the public.

The Des Lee Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition Two Sides of a 45: Lisha Bai, J. Michael Deane, and Jane Fox Hipple. The works of the three artists featured in this exhibition are tethered to each other loosely through geometry and a straightforward manipulation of materials and images. They are based across the country and are all alumni of Washington University in St. Louis.

Two Sides of a 45 is a misleading title, as there are more than two different perspectives represented within the exhibition. The viewpoints vary in combinations between the artists and within their individual work. An interesting dialogue is created when the work of one artist is placed within proximity of another artist's work, especially when the artists are not expressively explicit in their content. Lisha's work in comparison with Mike's can prompt a different "read" to his work than Jane's does in comparison, and so-on. The title poetically references a 45 rpm vinyl record, a 45° degree angle and a .45 caliber pistol.

“My paintings are a sort of documentation and exploration of memory, personal relationships and the underbelly of the American cultural landscape. By using a range of mark making and line work I build the image within a few layers. In the paintings I allow imagery from one instance to blend into another like a seamless collage.

"The logic of memory works very much like the logic of dreaming and that idea has been one of the underpinnings of my work and something that I am just really fascinated by. I try to combine the fluidity of memory with a delicate line and modulated color washes that cast a poetic resonance to capture the character of a memory caught midstream.”

There is a time when domestic and commercial spaces sit vacant in anticipation of their future occupants. Spatial vacancy is an ephemeral period of time potentially ranging from hours to days to years. This exhibition is a result of planned choices manifesting an opportunity to consciously inhabit this space during a time of vacancy.

For Rent includes works by Jessi Cerutti, Jake Cruzen, Bryan Eaton, Dani Kantrowitz, Kelda Martensen, Dan Solberg, B.j. Vogt, and letters to Mick Jagger (collected by Travis Howser). In addition, J. Taylor Wallace will host a Tea Parody and Sarah Palin will be cooking up more phallacies (sic).

Martin Brief is an artist whose recent work, long-term, absurd, drawing based tasks, explores the way that language, thought, and information relate to contemporary culture and the creation of self. In his most recent work titled Success, Brief has taken his process to another level. Defining success is an inherently subjective process. Romantic love, loads of money, eternal glory, worldly powers are each obvious markers of success. Conversely humble things like keeping a family together through thick and thin, or finishing high school can be considered as true success. Abstract moral qualities like perseverance, honor, self-sacrifice can be added to that list. But how do you define success at a more atomic level? The linguistic nuts and bolts? The etymological ne plus ultra of success? Well Martin Brief has done so... the overall effect will leave you numbed and shocked but also in awe.

Harry Bertoia: 40 Years of Drawing

Gallery 210 is pleased to present Harry Bertoia, Forty Years of Drawing, a collection featuring over 30 rarely seen monoprints from the Harry Bertoia estate. Also featured in the exhibition will be examples of Bertoia's furniture design and sculpture. On loan from Knoll will be Bertoia's Diamond, Chair Child Diamond Chair, Bird Chair & Ottoman, and Outdoor Chair. These pieces are made available through Knoll. As well as the drawings and furniture the exhibition will include one of his well know 'sound' sculptures.

This exhibition organized by the Seraphin Gallery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with assistance from Knoll. It will be held from January 26th to March 17th, 2012. A public reception for the exhibition will be held January 26th, 2012 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. During the reception Celia Bertoia, the artist's daughter, will present a slide lecture describing her father's life and work. Her lecture begins at 6:15 PM and will be held in the Gallery 210 auditorium.

MACEDONIAN INSPIRATIONS: MODERN ARTIFACTS

During two recent summers, photographer David R. Hanlon joined an archaeological team excavating a medieval castle in Skopje, the capital of the Republic of Macedonia. Photographing the ruins and its artifacts piqued his interest in discovering more about the older culture associated with this structure, as well as the contemporary urban spaces of the country. Twenty of his Macedonian photographs, which integrate past and present iconography, are on view at PHD Gallery. Complementing the photographic images are ten Macedonian inspired, ceramic vessels created by James Ibur. Ibur’s work resembles artifacts that might be found in an archeological dig with surfaces and illustrative motifs that are drawn out of natural environments and often reflect specific cultures. The pieces on view meld images of spirals, labyrinths and other bridges with iconic vessel imagery inspired from Mediterranean Amphoras, Middle Eastern minarets and elements of African Architecture.

“Adaptation,” an exhibit of paintings by Jonathan David Lange, will be on display in the Bonsack Gallery at John Burroughs School from February 10 through April 10, 2012.

Lange describes his paintings as being concerned with multiple subjects with two primary themes. He says that the first theme has to do with ideas, before any word of description or physical action has been attached to the idea. The second theme has to do with memory, how we often unconsciously distort and fill in our personal history to bridge gaps and try to reconcile a peace or continuum within us. Lange places these themes in the contemporary context of our frenetically paced society — the age of the Internet.

All are invited to a public reception hosted by the artist from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, on Friday, February 10. Regular gallery hours are 8 am to 6:30 pm, weekdays. The exhibit is free to the public. Mad Art Gallery proudly presents Socially Awkward; the delightfully subversive works of Jert and Ron Buechele. This exhibit opens on Friday, February 3, 2012, with a free reception from 7:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. and continues through February 28, 2012.

Jert is artist Jeremy Townsend. Jert spent a decade traveling from theme park to theme park drawing caricatures for a living. Once released from that purgatory, Jert focused his work on the nature of crass, absurdist pop culture. Jert's work has jokingly been described by Hate Comics creator Peter Bagge as "... like Mort Walker('s) only weirder, like Mort Walker for hippies". Sebastian Kruger once declared that "Jert is his own church". Using a mixture of watercolors, acrylics, and inks on board and paper, Jert’s work is the perfect comrade-in-arms for the paintings of Mad Art Gallery owner, Ron Buechele. Buechele's new paintings, his first new work in over four years, explore the seven deadly sins. He creates a convenient guide to eternal damnation. The seven deadly sins are those transgressions which are fatal to spiritual progress.

The artist will participate in the design process by choosing the shoe size (10.5) and title.
The paintings for this exhibition will look like Robert Ryman Paintings.
The paintings will match the wall of the exhibition space and will be made on-site.
If the exhibition space were purple they would look less like Robert Ryman paintings.
The artist will participate in editing the exhibition photos.
Extra gallery lights with color filters will be brought in to the exhibition space along with the work. The lights will act as primers for the digital editing process.

On Friday, January 20th Los Caminos will present Are We There Yet?, a group exhibition featuring The Children of the End of the World. This eleven-member student collective from Washington University came together to reach audiences outside of the university and forge connections with St. Louis’ alternative art organizations. Hegarty, Rebecca Naegele, Lisa Niemiec, Godiva Reisenbichler, Matthew Rosenfeld, Netta Sadovsky, Annie Sarachen, Madison Sembler, Jessica Star, and Adam Wand.

Are We There Yet? will be the second show organized by The Children of the End of the World, following Primordial Ooze last October. Plans for additional exhibitions this spring are in process. In the advent of both 2012 and their senior year, the Children will explore notions of impending doom throughout their upcoming exhibition season.

Drew Henry Salon and Gallery located on 2309 Cherokee Street (part of Antique Row) has been hosting a solo show by Naomi Susan Schwartz Jacobs. Visitors to Jacobs’ booth at the Taste of Saint Louis last September were wowed by the vibrant colors and the sense of happiness conveyed in her work. Few could believe that she creates her work using the computer, as she uses the same techniques found in traditional painting. The artwork is printed on special stretched canvas thus achieving a rich shimmering effect and includes seven paintings never previously exhibited before.

The Closing Night will take place on Saturday, February 4, 2012 from 7-10 pm and will include live music, drinks, and tasty edibles.

Jacoby Arts Center is pleased to present the Awards of Excellence 2012 Exhibition. Award winners of last year’s annual juried exhibit are invited back to display their talents in Awards of Excellence 2012. This year’s juror, Noah Kirby, selected the work of local artists Jason Bly, Dennis DeToye, Toni Mack, Andrew Van Der Tuin and Jeff Vaughn to present this January.

The opening for this exhibition is January 20, and Jacoby Arts Center is hosting a Gallery Talk on February 8 to grant local art enthusiasts a chance to meet the artists and hear about their processes, motivations and future projects.

This year each artist’s work is unique and provocative. Painter Jason Bly’s realistically rendered objects are an investigation into the daily barrage of digital images and how we process the information. He meticulously paints chosen digital images in a traditional painting method of thin layers of oil paint — juxtaposing realistic rendered images with flat graphic surfaces and comparing the deliverance of the image. Sculptor Andrew Van Der Tuin also uses resources from our current technology, sourcing materials from Home Depot to make deceptively simple, light weight, flexible pieces that reduce the sculptural elements to “kits of parts” wood, zip ties and steel. The constructed parts multiply, describing form, movement and concepts.

In comparison, Jeff Vaughn masterly paints lush landscapes giving us a sense of divine beauty. He records the earth’s glory so completely that you receive the same joy and inspiration as a day in the woods. Dennis DeToye really can’t say why he likes to paint faces. He finds painting people with glasses, dark skin tones and wrinkles interesting and challenging. Fibers artist Toni Mack’s whimsical hooked rug piece, Tolle Lane, is a walk through childhood memories, a placed loved and captured in her heart and soul.

Noah Kirby, a professional sculptor and Senior Lecturer of Sculpture at Washington University in St. Louis, co-founded Six Mile Sculpture Works, a non-profit institution dedicated to preserving, promoting and expanding our sculptural and industrial heritage.

Art Saint Louis proudly presents our newest exhibit, "Memory," on view in the Gallery January 16-February 23, 2012. Please join us NEXT Saturday, January 21, from 6-8 p.m. for a free reception. This multi-media exhibition was open to artists 21+ residing in the St. Louis region (includes 200 mile radius). Artists were invited to submit original artworks that explore the theme of memory-all styles, media, techniques, and interpretations were encouraged. For this exhibit, 93 artists submitted 168 artworks for our jurors' consideration, from which Heyda and Newman selected 49 artworks in a variety of media by 33 artists for the exhibit.

Art Saint Louis proudly presents "Sukkah City Annex: Defining & Defying Boundaries," a concurrent exhibit on view January 16-February 23, 2012. The reception for this exhibit is also held on Saturday, January 21, 6-8 p.m. and is FREE & open to the public.

Presented in ASL's Dion Dion Gallery, the exhibit is co-presented by Art Saint Louis and the Museum of ImaJewnation. As created by Museum co-founder Naomi Fishman, the aim of this project was to start a conversation about the role boundaries play in defining and defying the contemporary human condition as interpreted by the building of the traditional Jewish structure of the Sukkah, a structure that recalls the homeless exodus through the desert and the festival of harvest, pilgrimage, and homecoming.

A temporary structure, the Sukkah dwelling is a perfect metaphor for defining a new kind of living amidst ever-changing boundaries. Works in this exhibit were curated by ASL's Robin Hirsch from the October 2011 exhibit "Sukkah City StL: Defining & Defying Boundaries," presented at Shaare Emeth Congregation, St. Louis.

Offered up each day, clever moments and lackluster days side-by-side, the 365 Project would be a remarkable opportunity to explore concepts including absurdity, humor, and social class. Within the larger story, the project was a regimented experiment, motivated by an interest in self discovery and identity, a compulsion to imagine and rapidly realize new ideas. Throughout the year the risk of failure was high, as life inevitably throws curveballs. The Longshot emerged as an occasion to select and share those images most engaging and poignant from a series populated by archetypes and symbolic depictions of intricate literary figures, cultural icons, stereotypes, and often-comical situations.

PPRC Photo Project documents City Greens Produce

City Greens Produce has a vision: the availability of accessible healthy, fresh and affordable food choices to fuel the bodies and minds of those inhabiting the St. Louis community. According to the innovative nonprofit, sponsored by Catholic Charities Midtown Center, “People unite around food sharing meals and memories. At City Greens our community is uniting to make sure each of us has the opportunity to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables from the good earth to our family’s tables.”

The Public Policy Research Center at the University of MissouriSt. Louis focused its cameras on the efforts of City Greens Produce for the latest round in its Photography Project series. The project participants include a diverse group ranging from the Catholic Charities Midtown Center director to a center volunteer’s granddaughter and in age from 15 to 67. Taking their cues from influential photographers Edward Weston (and his close-up shots of fruits and vegetables) and Roy DeCarava (and his poetic photos of Harlem, N.Y.), the project participants documented City Greens Produce’s community garden and its market on wheels, the Supa’ Fresh Veggie Mobile.

An exhibit of the group’s colorful photos, “Photography Project: City Greens Produce,” will be on display Jan. 17 to March 4 at the PPRC Photography Gallery, south hall of the 4th floor in the Social Sciences & Business Building at UMSL, 1 University Blvd. in St. Louis County (63121). Gallery hours are from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. An opening reception will be from noon to 1 p.m. Jan. 17 in the gallery.

A duplicate of the exhibit will be on display Jan. 17 to March 4 at City Greens Produce in Catholic Charities Midtown Center, 1202 S. Boyle Ave. in St. Louis (63110). These works examine the complex relationship between animals and humans. Although the nature of that connection has evolved over time, animals have continued to hold a place of paramount significance in our lives. Whether used for transportation, mythologized in religious and spiritual stories, or loved as a companion, animals have always been inextricably bound to our history. Each of these artists interprets the mystery of that relationship in a different way, some exploring the essence of animals, their soul, spirit or symbolic personification; others comment on their fragile existence in the contemporary natural world.

Opening concurrently in the Charak Gallery is The Garden, an exhibition featuring new clay works by Adam Posnak.

Good Citizen is pleased to present The Indeterminate Length, an expansive sculptural installation and billboard project by Mike Calway-Fagen.

For The Indeterminate Length, Mike Calway-Fagen will incorporate sculptural installation techniques and photography to explore the nature of time experienced and actual: the incomprehensible indefiniteness of change. Discarded bits of furniture, chairs, tables, shelves, stools, bricks, rocks, and other provocative objects, pulled from alleys and lots around St. Louis will be stacked and arranged atop a similarly collected carpeting. The construction will form a shifting scaffold that is frozen in time. The edifice of objects will undergo several reorganizations during the course of the exhibition. With each subsequent arrangement an impression will be left in the carpet, accumulating an index of the prints left behind. Further exploring the sense of time, Calway-Fagen has designed the show cards for the exhibition as a small work of art. Visitors are encouraged to take away the card and see it as something fleeting but specific, freezing a moment in time but maintaining a sense of preciousness.

Although internationally renowned as one of the pioneers of installation art, the exhibition at Bruno David Gallery, Recent Work exhibits Judy Pfaff's adroitness in creating smaller works of art. Melding several kinds of media and methods of art-making together, Pfaff redefines the capacities of what art can be. A fully illustrated catalogue with essays by Buzz Spector and Kara Gordon accompanies the exhibit.

Balancing intense planning with improvisational decision-making, Pfaff is known for creating exuberant, sprawling sculptures and installations that weave landscape, architecture, and color into a tense yet organic whole. A pioneer of installation art in the 1970s, Pfaff synthesizes sculpture, painting, and architecture into dynamic environments in which space seems to expand and collapse, fluctuating between the two- and three-dimensional. Pfaff’s work is a complex ordering of visual information composed of steel, fiberglass, and plaster as well as salvaged signage and natural elements such as tree roots. Her works are piercing, careening through space, achieving lightness and explosive energy. She has extended her interest in natural motifs in a series of prints integrating vegetation, maps, and medical illustrations, and has developed her dramatic sculptural materials into set designs for several theatrical stage productions.

In the Front Room, the gallery presents an exhibition, titled Seven Days in O Land O by Carmon Colangelo. This collection of prints investigates the phenomenon of globalization and the disappearance of local culture and the gradual homogenization of American life. Inspired by a seven-day trip in Orlando, it was originally conceived to be seven interrelated, recto-verso prints that could be bound together and folded in a sequence that is suggestive of a road map. These prints combine woodblock and letterpress techniques and digital and relief printing, as well as hand coloring on Kitakata paper. Synthesizing images, texts, notations and manipulated drawings, they also incorporate abstract maps, Disneyesque images and generic hotel floor plans that suggest modern and post-modern cities. In method and concept, “O Land O” is a pastiche and amalgamation. While related, however, these prints are far from homogeneous. Each print is unique and capable of being displayed on its own. Nevertheless, their impact is best felt when the prints are shown together or experienced as a portfolio. A fully illustrated catalogue with essays by Katherine Van Uum and Theo Lotz accompanies the exhibition. The prints were created at Flying Horse Editions, University of Central Florida, Orlando, Florida, in collaboration with Theo Lotz and Larry Cooper with the assistance of Adrian Gonzzales.

In the Project Room, the gallery presents an exhibition, titled “Midsection” by Jill Downen. In Midsection, Downen employs the metaphoric relationship between bodies and buildings in an installation of sculptural forms. The torso, specifically from the bust to the navel, takes on the role of sculpted building blocks situated in relation to the space of the project room. Jill Downen's art is a focused investigation of the symbiotic relationship between the human body and architecture expressed in temporal installations, drawings, and models. Her art envisions a place of interdependent relation between the human body and architecture, where the exchanging forces and tensions of construction, deterioration, and restoration emerge as thematic possibilities.

In the Media Room, the gallery presents a video work titled “Abiding (Proba Wody)" - (Trial by Water) by Monika Weiss. Aneta Szylak writes, "Monika Weiss combines traditional techniques such as drawing with performance, video and sound installations. The perpetual aspect of her performances, their slowness, repetitiveness are very much experience oriented. Abiding (Proba Wody (1999-2000) deals with ritual immersion and separates the performing subject from her usual surroundings. Many of her often-risky performances with immersions in different liquids provide sensory deprivation and have almost meditative aspects. In the Xerox Project (1999) Monika Weiss makes herself one with the working Xerox copier when exposing her face and hair to the light of the machine. The repetitive cycle of the working machine and its flashing light feel dramatic, as the artist goes about making what soon became her trademark: the imprint of the body, the body as a means of drawing and the ritual of inclusion or immersion." With a background in math and art, it’s no wonder that Jeff Sippel views printmaking in terms of problem solving. “There aren’t solutions to every problem,” he acknowledges, “but I always enjoy a good challenge,” says Sippel. With regard to art, Sippel enjoys figuring out which elements (colors, objects, or composition) will be most important in his final prints. His work combines balance, illusion, and the evocative quality of abstraction.

Like Sippel, Stephen Da Lay, curator of the exhibition, is also drawn to mathematics. He is interested in how numbers make and predict patterns relating to symmetry. For the past five years, he has been creating a series of three-dimensional polyhedrons with printed images on their surfaces.

This exhibition, which opens from 5:30 to 7:30 on Friday, January 20, includes two other printmakers, Bob Hartzell and Rudy Zapf. Hartzell’s itinerant life led him from northern Missouri to Chicago and most recently to St. Louis. He recently organized the “Lights along the Cherokee” project that corresponded with the SGC International Conference, the largest print organization in North America, held in St. Louis in March 2011.

Zapf is a printmaking and mixed media artist who uses symbols in her work to tell intensely personal stories and address themes of loss, hope, childhood memories and the rediscovery of love.

“If a Print is Shown, Will Someone See It?” encompasses many printing methods including serigraphy, intaglio, woodcut, and waterless lithography. The title of the show asks the viewer to engage in the process of scrutinizing the art and to question the artists’ points of view.

We both began with a simple curiosity of the medium, which has evolved into very different bodies of work, each commenting on the philosophy and ethics of beauty in very unique ways. As we juxtapose our work under the title “To Be Is To Be Perceived," ontological questions naturally arise. For instance, “How does philosophical contemplation change in the presence of an art object and in an art gallery?” Conceptualism has traditionally seen the de-materialization of the art object, but here and now, we would like to engage in a collaborative approach with philosophy. Please do join us in our thought experiment, where we will be reclaiming conceptualism in our quest to know how art objects carry meaning and help us to understand existence.

When viewing Hamilton’s thrown pieces, one might think of Plato’s Forms. Her pieces are not a casual demonstration of roundness. Instead, platters claim a circular perfection truly transcendent of the act of throwing on the wheel; her urns are an expression of pure form. For her, the sphere and the cone expand and contract in simple geometric elegance. On the other hand, Reese’s sculptural works turn away from ideal and model forms. Reese poignantly observes the softness of flesh and the richness of texture in her figurative work. One might note that her approach draws more from Aristotle than Plato. Her corporeal forms with tangible expression, suggest that she searches for the universal within the particular.

Through our diverse interpretations of the medium, we explore the concept of vessel - literally and figuratively, functionally and sculpturally. And, it is in contrast to each other that we are able to embody some of the basic questions at the foundation of art making and philosophy, yet, both in fast pursuit of the question “How do we perceive beauty?”

In three sweeping tableaux vivants filmed in Chicago, Warsaw and Mexico City, artists Yoni Goldstein and Meredith Zielke present a rich cartography of identity at its most nebulous form.

“These bodily fluids…are what life withstands, hardly and with difficulty, on the part of death. There, I am at the border of my condition as a living being. My body extricates itself, as being alive, from that border. Such wastes drop so that I might live, until, from loss to loss, nothing remains in me and my entire body falls beyond the limit — cadere, cadaver.” – Julia Kristeva
In three sweeping tableaux vivants, artists Yoni Goldstein and Meredith Zielke present a rich cartography of identity at its most nebulous form. The rigid boundaries erected by conventional interpretations of collective, conditional, and bodily identities are torn down in The Jettisoned: bodily mechanisms present sickness and health as being part of the same process of sustained loss; anachronistic renditions of epic gestures deplete the national epic of its definitive qualities; crypto-judaic ritual offers veiled signs of a heritage while simultaneously dissolving it into another religious tradition. Fittingly, The Jettisoned engages these interstitial spaces with an equally nebulous aesthetic approach, a filmic rendering of the painterly tradition of the tableaux. However solitary and ambiguous the sites it explores are, The Jettisoned offers the possibility of abject recognition.

The tableaux vivants, or living paintings, that constitute The Jettisoned were shot in Chicago, Warsaw, and Mexico City. The carefully considered set design incorporates authentic elements of both the location and tradition addressed in each tableau. The Mexico tableau for instance, incorporates genuine Masonic garb and other crypto-Judaic artifacts with a Mexican working class altar to a flower covered Y-chromosomal Aaron, otherwise known as the “Jewish Gene”. The Warsaw tableau is placed in a large animal surgical theater, with Polish locals positioned as manipulated monuments and figures from national epics. In the Chicago tableau, Goldstein and Zielke’s childhood memories from Netanya, Israel and Detroit, USA combine within viscous, fluid seepages inside a former industrial soap factory.

For The Indeterminate Length, Mike Calway-Fagen will incorporate sculptural installation techniques and photography to explore the nature of time experienced and actual: the incomprehensible indefiniteness of change. Discarded bits of furniture, chairs, tables, shelves, stools, bricks, rocks, and other provocative objects, pulled from alleys and lots around St. Louis will be stacked and arranged atop a similarly collected carpeting. The construction will form a shifting scaffold that is frozen in time. The edifice of objects will undergo several reorganizations during the course of the exhibition. With each subsequent arrangement an impression will be left in the carpet, accumulating an index of the prints left behind. Further exploring the sense of time, Calway-Fagen has designed the show cards for the exhibition as a small work of art. Visitors are encouraged to take away the card and see it as something fleeting but specific, freezing a moment in time but maintaining a sense of preciousness. The exhibition explores the art of contemporary furniture design. The works of Kimberly Winkle, Brian Ferrell, and Matt Keim feature abstract forms, colorful surfaces, and combined materials while maintaining their functionality as interior objects.

An element of play is evident in the subtly colored furniture designs of Kimberly Winkle. Hand drawn patterns in graphite and paint complement her gently rounded and smooth wooden forms. Kimberly transitions from complex swirls of lines and dots to the simplicity of bare wood in order to highlight the natural beauty of woods such as cherry or mahogany, while enhancing the surface quality of poplar with her mark making.

Brian Ferrell emphasizes clean lines and tapered angles to create compositions in wood and metal. His sculptures employ a repetition of shape and line to guide the viewer’s eye in and around an interplay of domestic and exotic woods such as paduak and walnut, steel cables, and pewter surfaces.

Matt Keim has been experimenting with wood for over thirty years. “I find it magical to stand in front of a lathe and watch long thin ribbons of wood fly over my shoulder, exposing a form within,” explains Matt. “I try to expose the beauty of the piece I am working on by defining the shape to show the grain pattern in all its glory.”

Practically Impractical: Aaron Quigley. Quigley started blowing glass at Third Degree in 2003. Amy VanDonsel and Chris King collaborate on and co-curate a small group show, the first in a projected annual exhibit series exploring the shapes that men and women are in. “The Shape of a Man,” explores the shapes men are in through a creative conversation between a woman and a man working in a variety of media (with help from their man friends, living and dead). Amy VanDonsel will show new mixed media, paintings and installation, and Chris King will release a chapbook, The Shape of a Man, and perform poems from it with Fred Friction, Roy Gokenbach and Josh Weinstein. The exhibit also will feature visual art by Oscar Alvarez, Kevin Belford, the late Hunter Brumfield, Ron Buechele, Jon Cournoyer, Dr. Andrew Dykeman, Fred Friction, Matt Fuller, Robert Goetz, Chris King, Noah Kirby and B.J. Amy VanDonsel creates mixed media paintings on canvas or panels and installations with paper, tape, string and found items. Chris King has been recasting his old, bad poems into the 7/11 form innovated by Quincy Troupe, alternating lines with 7 and 11 syllables and alternating stanzas with 7 and 11 lines, with results he likes enough to publish. As an “artist,” he sketches people and then has the subject sign the sketch, or makes paintings on vinyl records based on his sketchbook. He will perform his poetry with musical guests through Noah Kirby’s sculpture With Solid Stance and Stable Sound.

Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches made specifically for Isolation Room is a faux stained glass Tour De Force. Isolation Room invites the viewer to jump into Sandra's fanatical mixture of psychedelic patterns and occult symbols constrained within a tidy snap grid. An arbitrary color scheme and heavily textured surface, create a primitive jouissance that's hard to beat. A startling variety of mediums, ranging from silver leaf to tangerine glitter to the latest shade of nail polish, contained inside each cell of the grid, reveals her interest in the fusion of organic nature and synthetic process.

Studio Altius extends an invitation to the public for the 5th annual SEEN photography exhibition. Every December, lovers of photography come to Studio Altius to view a collection of the best photography created in that year from St. Louis area photographers. This show celebrates photographers, professional and amateur, across all genres. It is the culmination of a contest to find the best of the best in St. Louis. We want to see what our best photographers have SEEN! The finalist images have been selected by a blind jury and will be displayed in the SEEN 2011 show at Studio Altius throughout the month of December and part of January. Top finalists in each of the 16 categories will receive hundreds of dollars in prizes from our sponsors. Additionally, a coffee table style photo-book has been made showing off the finalists, plus several other standout images. This book will be available to purchase during the run of the show. If you are unfamiliar with PechaKucha it is a short presentation format that originally began in Tokyo as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. Los Caminos has selected a group of regional artists to creatively interpret this format in order to discuss their artistic practices.

Going native, Isolation Room/Gallerykit is pleased to present new work by outsider artist Sandra Marchewa. Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches made specifically for Isolation Room is a faux stained glass Tour De Force. Isolation Room invites the viewer to jump into Sandra's fanatical mixture of psychedelic patterns and occult symbols constrained within a tidy snap grid. An arbitrary color scheme and heavily textured surface, create a primitive jouissance that's hard to beat. A startling variety of mediums, ranging from silver leaf to tangerine glitter to the latest shade of nail polish, contained inside each cell of the grid, reveals her interest in the fusion of organic nature and synthetic process.

MySLART.org is looking for 33 artists to exhibit their work at our "33December" art exhibit in Webster Groves. This weekend show includes an opening reception Friday, December 16, from 5:30 pm to 10 pm. And will also be open to the public on Saturday, December 17, from 10 am to 5 pm.

Artists are invited to submit three works each in any medium or mixed media. For works submitted to be hung on the wall, each artist is limited to 6’ feet of horizontal wall space for the three works. For sculpture, each artist is limited to an area 6' square. Pedestals (if required) are supplied by the artist.

We're also looking for one of the artists to paint, sculpt, pot, or whatever, live from 5:30pm to 10pm at the opening reception. A performance artist would also be welcome to apply.

MySLART.org charges no gallery commissions on sales of your work, you keep 100%. But there is a $30 entry fee per accepted artist (not per work). There is no fee for submitting your work.

Three artists accepted for this show will be selected for Best of Show award, Second Place award, and Third Place award. Those winners will receive a $75, $50, or $25 gift certificate from Llywelyn's Pub. Additionally, the top four artists, as voted by visitors to the opening reception, will also each receive a bottle of Mount Pleasant wine from its Estate series.

Deadline for received submissions is Friday, December 2. But don’t delay submitting. Submissions will be reviewed as received and accepted or rejected only until we have 33 artists accepted. 11 artist slots are already taken.

Bruno David Gallery is pleased to present Damon Freed’s second solo exhibition with the gallery entitled Life Saver. Continuing his exploration of push and pull, Freed delves deeper into the dichotomy of balance and asymmetry. Driven by his tempo of thought and our contemporary cadence, Freed’s new paintings have a pulse. Warm colors accentuated by black outlines vibrate throughout the paintings; their asymmetrical applications offset centered compositions. They are warm, full of life, always moving and always on the verge of further action.

The tension between the potential and kinetic energies of the paintings calls the viewer to mobilize, to play and to find joy in doing so. The paintings are active and reflective, full of opposing relationships, yet embracive of all these qualities. Freed’s titles enhance the already-present sense of harmony by grounding the abstract compositions with associations that are either concrete or presented in a language that allows the viewer to collaborate in its meaning.
A fully illustrated catalogue with an essay by Kara Gordon and poems by Damon Freed accompanies the exhibit.

In the Project Room, the gallery presents a group exhibition of works on paper titled WOP I by several artists of the gallery including, Buzz Spector, Chris Kahler, Beverly Fishman, Carmon Colangelo, Laura Beard, Alex Couwenberg, Jill Downen, Kelley Johnson, Martin Brief, Joan Hall, Van McElwee and others.

In the Front Room, the gallery presents an exhibition, titled “Ye Ol Saint Nick” by Shawn Burkard. Part of a series, “The House of Mimesis/Revolving Personalities,” this photograph illustrates Burkard’s Christmas spirit. A unique perspective on the over-commercialization of this religious holiday, Burkard depicts Christmas as a gaudy capitalist invention. The fabrication of the scene—the tin foil, the garbage bag as a gift sack—is as contrived as many people’s “holiday cheer,” but there is no pretense in Burkard’s stance. Saint Nick’s facial expression, posture and action of pouring out the milk are cynical and satirical. This shocking visual metaphor sends his message loud and clear: we’ve been bad children and Saint Nick does not want our milk and cookies this year.

In the Media Room, the gallery presents a new video work titled Light Diet by Dickson Beall. Light Diet is an investigation of the relationship between past and present. Through this exploration, Beall looks to portray the human experience of change through light and space.
Inspired by the Reflection of the Buddah at the Pulitzer Foundation of the Arts, Beall’s work with light and movement in space aims to transcend his subject matter. We are constantly moving, constantly burning and replenishing. This process of constant change is beautiful, elegant in its own right. As disparate as the past traditions of the still life might seem to the future realities in artificial intelligence, there is a bridge across the gap. Beall looks to construct and reform this bridge.

(A portion of proceeds will benefit with work of MIRA.) The exhibit will examine the nation’s multicultural heritage and address the social, economic and political obstacles faced by “the others.”

Aisle 1 Gallery, St. Louis Arts Project and The Screwed Arts Collective Presents "The Clean Up" on Saturday, December 10

For the first time three art organizations will come together to present The Clean Up, which will primarily feature artwork from the Screwed Arts Collective at Aisle 1 Gallery and two new ventures from St. Louis Arts Project. The night will be a cross between a gallery reception and party as visual art at Aisle 1 and from St. Louis Arts Project gets paired with a diverse line-up of live music from Scripts N Screwz, 18andCounting, DJ Mahf, US English, Bace Monk and a DJ set from So Many Dynamos.

Starting at 7:00 PM, Aisle 1 Gallery (2627 Cherokee) will host the opening reception for The Clean Up, a show featuring work from St. Louis' own Screwed Arts Collective and other city artists. Those artists showing work in the show include: Ruben Aguirre, Daniel Burnett, Jenn Carter, Stan Chisholm, Daniel Gaeng, Daniel Jefferson, Ben Pierce, Joey Potts, REVISE CMW, Chris Sabatino ,Jason Spencer, Danielle Spradley, Joy Tiyasirichokchai, Justin Tolentino, Amy VanDonsel, Bryan Walsh and Peat Wollaeger. St. Louis Arts Project (SLAP) will debut two new ventures that night - Iconoclash and the SLAP Artist Store. Iconoclash is a new artist series presented by SLAP that pairs together two artists to create an interactive art installation for one night only. To kickoff the series, Damon Davis (Scripts N Screwz, Civil Ape) and Skip Jones (Made Monarchs) will work together to make a sound installation that creates music based off participants' specific physical actions and brain activity. A short documentary on the making of the installation will also be showing. The Iconoclash installation will be open at The Bomb Door from 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM.

The second debut of the night from SLAP will be the Artist Store which features SLAP member's work - from music to clothes to posters - available for sale. There will be a pop-up shop on site for one night only with work from WORK/PLAY, Civil Ape, Made Monarchs, Emily Heymeyer and The Luminary Center for the Arts plus a limited edition SLAP poster. The following day the SLAP Artist Store will be make its debut online at www. stlartproject.org.

Along with the SLAP Artist Store and Iconoclash series, there will be live music at The Bomb Door starting at 9:30 PM. The line-up is exclusively made up of SLAP members and includes Scripts N Screwz, US English and a DJ set from Aaron and Norm of So Many Dynamos.

Exhibition continues through January 7, 2012

This exhibition features photographs by Jerry Levy and Stan Strembicki which center on the nude in the landscape. While Levy situates the figure in real landscapes of surreal beauty, Strembicki manipulates the pairing of figure and environment to present a new kind of landscape within which the figure lives.

Isolation Room/Gallery Kit is pleased to announce an exhibition with London based artist Giles Eldridge. GOLD, 2011, is a series of works pulled from Eldridge’s personal archive. This particular grouping was created and specifically chosen by the artist for Isolation Room to be held in stasis as a probable narrative. Eldridge culls his imagery from a variety of sources with varied references from politics, pop culture, art and architecture. Within his body of work or “archive,” Eldridge utilizes different techniques to render these subjects. Each work is individual ranging from detailed graphite drawings to relaxed watercolor sketches, varying from photo-realist to impressionistic to completely abstract. The deliberate inconsistency is Eldrige’s way of articulating the differences and offering autonomy to each of his paintings and drawings from his always expanding archive.

'In Plain Air'

New paintings from Christopher Paquet and Seth Coston
at Hoffman LaChance Contemporary

In August 2000 Seth Coston and Christopher Paquet met while on the MA at Goldsmiths College in London, UK. The commonalities in their backgrounds, having both grown up between the Midwest and Atlantic seaboard, gave them a similar outlook. Their perspectives were also informed by a shared interest in the writings of George Bataille, and the paintings of artists, such as: Jacques-Louis David, Francis Bacon, and Robert Williams. Both artists' practices are informed by such pop culture touchstones as: the films of David Cronenberg, the comics of Robert Crumb and the music of Black Sabbath. Both artists now live and work in New York City.
This coming November Coston and Paquet will be exhibiting "In Plain Air" at Hoffman LaChance Contemporary. This exhibition will be a salon of new paintings in the French tradition of genre painting. The artists will explore themes of work/transgression; stasis/mutation; utopia/dystopia using the traditional formats of history painting, landscape, portraiture and still life.
