Bonsack Gallery: Friday, 11 Novembe 2011

Life Leaps Over / silkscreen on paper / 20"x30" / 2009
November 11, 2011 - January 3, 2012
Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 6:30 pm

Artist's Reception Friday, November 11, 5:30 to 7:30 pm

This collection features recent silkscreen work as well as a new body of prints devoted to reading, literacy, and listening. I have always loved words, and their complex histories of meaning. I have a public career as a designer, educator and author; fewer know I am also dyslexic and reading presents challenges. This body of work is a song to adaptation. It explores alternative ways to build a lifetime of learning when faced with both physical and temporal limitations. Its mission is to make memory objects to record passages from books I listen to while working in studio. Recordings are intangible; they are difficult to search and highlight, impossible to dog-ear, and don’t necessarily lend themselves to deep analysis. This work comments on our relationship with reading and the written and spoken word and how this relationship is changing in current times. - Jen McKnight

Electric is the Love
October 29, 2011 – January 22, 2012
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 29, 5:00-7:00 p.m.
Laumeier Sculpture Park's Indoor Galleries

Laumeier Sculpture Park presents Electric is the Love, in the ninth installment of the Kranzberg Exhibition Series which features artists from the St. Louis region. Electric is the Love will bring together a range of practitioners: collaborative architects, a sound artist, a super gamer and a sci-fi sculptor. Recognizing how personal devices, mobile networks and surveillance technologies now unite us by creating a conduit that organizes our contemporary lives, the indoor galleries at Laumeier Sculpture Park will be transformed into a space to engage in a conversation about our attraction to digital, electric and mechanical practices and to explore the lure of interactive environments. Opening October 29, 2011 and continuing through January 22, 2012, the exhibition will include new works by local artists Dave Derington, Eric Hall, Christopher Ottinger, Yo_Cy (Christine Yogiaman and Ken Tracy) and Robin Assner and Adam Watkins (who will create a didactic video collaboration).

During the Electric is the Love exhibition, Laumeier's Indoor Galleries will be open Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. The Indoor Galleries will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Meramec Contemporary Art Gallery: Thursday, 27 October 2011

Hunt Gallery: Friday, 28 October 2011

“Contemporary Anthropomorphism” is a group exhibition featuring sculpture, installation, drawing, video works and photography by local and national artists exploring the infiltration and adaptation of nature by contemporary human cultural practices.

Opening Reception: Friday, Oct. 28, 6 – 8 p.m.
Exhibit dates: Oct. 28 – Nov. 26

The exhibit, curated by Webster adjunct art professor B.j. Vogt, includes the works Cameron Fuller (St. Louis), David Johnson (St. Louis), Jamie Kreher (St. Louis), Karen McCoy (Kansas City), Carin Mincemoyer (Pittsburgh) and Eric Troffkin (Detroit).

For centuries, humans have interpreted their surroundings through the creation of objects and images depicting the marriage of culture with the natural world. Through transformation, integration, ritual, and the creation of new language, we have recontextualized and given meaning to our place in nature. The works chosen for this exhibition highlight contemporary translations of these concepts, filtering the present adaptation with, and of, our environment through the lenses of myth, landscape, science, and architecture.

Good Citizen Gallery: Friday, 18 November 2011

Matthew Harting - La Belle's Baron Steed
Good Citizen invites you to Pinholio, an exhibition of contemporary pinhole photography.

November 18 - December 17
Opening Reception Friday, November 18, 6-10 PM

Pinholio, curated by Alison Ouellette-Kirby and Mark A. Fisher, celebrates the art of pinhole photography. The exhibition will feature a juried selection of local and national artists as well as selections from renowned photographers Pinky Bass, Nancy Spencer, and Eric Renner. The pinhole camera is a device made often from ordinary materials (boxes, cams, and oatmeal canisters) which uses a small aperture to focus light. Operating without a lens, the aperture is quite often the size of a pinhead, thus the term "Pinhole". Typically pinhole cameras require long exposures that allow them to capture movement and distortion. Pinhole enthusiasts have traditionally used black and white photo paper or negatives to create their images, however several artists have adapted the digital medium towards similar effects.

Examples of Pinky Bass' work can be found at pinkymmbass.blogspot.com and colophon.com .
Examples of Nancy Spencer and Eric Renner's work can be found at Nancyspencerphoto.com and Ericrennerphoto.com

I see the movement in a bicycle wheel, the energy of skating and the marks left behind or throwing a pot on the wheel as being part of a memory of movements I make when practicing Taiji.”

Christ Church Cathedral]: Sunday, 30 October 2011

Public opening Sunday October 30th, 5-8 pm.

Christ Church Cathedral will host the international art exhibition, "Icons in Transformation," after an acclaimed European tour that included cathedrals in Oslo, Helsinki, Hereford, Gloucester and Liverpool, among others. It is now touring the U.S. cathedrals. The exhibition is a 180-piece array of contemporary and traditional Russian Icons. The solo exhibit of contemporary icons is by Russian-born artist Ludmila Pawlowska and includes some 40 traditional icons painted by the monks of the Vassilevsky Monastery in Russia. The works have been specially designed with Cathedrals in mind. It is not necessarily an exhibition about icons, but about Ludmila's inspiration derived from the icons, her vision of their transformative power. Ludmila uses similar techniques such as many paint layers, along with the meaning of colors--yet she crosses the boundaries into transformation.

The Work of the expatriate Russian now living in Sweden is deeply influenced by traditional Eastern Orthodox icons. Mila's show comes with a collection of traditional icons made at monastery workshops in the years since a measure of religious freedom returned to Russia. There are as many as 180 pieces of Pawlowska's work, plus a collection of 24 traditional icons made by contemporary artists at monasteries in Russia.

Nicholas Kriefall - Oil Spills and Metaphors

Fascinated by the relationship between light and water, as well as the obscure perceptions we can have at night, his work shows the balance of these three elements. Be it a body of water before a brilliant horizon, or wet street beneath a busy nightlife, to say which of these elements has the most influence is impossible, an idea he is driven on.

"it is not a pipe"
Ann Hamilton from the collection of (curated by) Buzz Spector

October 6 - November 3, 2011
Opening Reception: October 6, 2011 6pm-8pm

Dear Dana, In July 1992 I received a package in the mail from Ann Hamilton. Inside was a small, slipcast porcelain, match holder; a “grandmother’s house”-type object in the form of a pipe resting on the pages of an opened book. The match holder was encased in a wad of newspaper, beneath which was a letter to me. The sentiments in this missive were of a personal nature, typical of those exchanged between friends, but Ann had done something more here, gluing little shards of glass to each word. So, the object in the form of a pipe, which was not one, was accompanied by a letter which was something more than a message. For nineteen years this letter has been kept with my mail; the match holder on a shelf in my studio. By now moving them from my private life to this public space I have isolated them for other kinds of scrutiny.

The title of this project is “it is not a pipe,” the phrase taken from Ann’s letter, but of course also a Magrittean trope. In this case, neither the object, nor the letter, nor this exhibit project, are quite what they seem.

Gallery hours by appointment.
