SLU Museum of Art: Friday, 6 May 2011

The Saint Louis University Museum of Art is pleased to host Sun-Smith-Foret: Final Cut. The exhibition begins with a 6 p.m. opening reception on Friday, May 6.

Over 30 tapestries, ranging from small pieces to wall-sized installations, represent Smith-Foret's interpretation of classic film and cinema. Smith-Foret uses the African American textile technique of strip piecing which uses brightly colored strips, multiple patterning, and appliqué. The result is compelling graphic imagery that conveys her interpretation of the tone and color of film genres that include Westerns; Women in Film; African-American films; and Global Cinema.

The tapestries are not only visual reinterpretations of classic films, but vignettes about the actors, directors, fictional and historical figures, and often the making and aftermath of the actual film

The textiles invite the viewer, visually, and by nature of the material, into a psychological conversation that envelopes like a quilt on a bed.

Impossible Vacation
Tommy Hartung, Thomas Helbig, Tony Matelli, Lin May, John McAllister, Scott Olson, Virginia Overton, and Mitzi Pederson

Opening reception Saturday evening May 7, 7-10 pm, Continues through June 4.

Impossible Vacation attempts to assert the primacy of the artist, proposing a reduced curatorial role in mediating the interaction between art and its audience. Discarding any organizing construct and foregrounding discrete artworks, this exhibition urges each contribution's independent consideration, unencumbered by any edict or secondary scholarship. Impossible Vacation sees the gallery space as a simple machine for the transmission of art to the viewer, declining to contrive connections or contextualize the works on view beyond the terms defined by the artists themselves. In adopting this institutional distance, the artworks and the exhibition are freed from superfluous interpretation, cultivating fuller experiences of uncertainty and understanding without capitulating to expectations for articulated linearity, resolution, or codification.

Art Dimensions Gallery: Friday, 3 June 2011

Roz Flax – Retrospective
Join us at the ArtD Gallery and Studios for an opening reception Friday June 3rd at 6pm.
The entire Roz Flax will be on exhibited in a silent auction. A live auction will be held at 8pm.
Silent auction books close at 9pm.

Roz Flax was instrumental in bringing “chalk talks” to various venues in the U.S. and abroad. Using a large easel, giant pieces of chalk, and music, Roz reached across the language barrier and spoke to audiences in countries such as Peru and Japan with themes that emphasized the goal of unity and world peace. She used multiple media and techniques to explore the intrinsic patterns in the natural world and urban settings. Her love of calligraphy and design transformed quotations of the sages, messages for social change, and her own poetry into works of art. Viewing Roz’s art in this retrospective reveals the complexity of her personal journey and the multi-dimensional role of the artist in modern times.

Laura Beard’s new paintings and drawings continue her exploration of the primary impulse of abstraction by focusing on the direction and texture of each brushstroke. By using this technique, the paintings take on a structured chaos that is both powerful and energetic. Through pure abstraction, the work strives to engage the emotional impact of color, the structure of human instinct and the complexity of a deliberately flexible process. This unique flexibility allows for the evolution of each new work to build on the experiences of the last. The paintings remain open to change at all stages due to the complex process Beard undertakes in their construction, resulting in each painting’s own evolving language. The final layers of refinement, the “thick and smooth”, ignited Beard to create a body of work that defies any simple explanation or description. The work seeks to illuminate its viewers through a message of experienced intention, as well as a heightened awareness that is essential to the painted truth that the artist represents.

In the Project Room and the Front Room, Charles Reay’s first solo exhibition at the Bruno David Gallery titled Recent Sculptures and Metamorphosis. Charles (Chip) Reay’s studio is an intensely personal space, a space removed from the routines of everyday life, where he can indulge his imagination. It is a space, where free association, experimentation, trials and errors, encourages the outpouring of his creative mind. In his studio, there are no rules or standards of taste or beauty. It is a space for pure expression. In this current exhibition, Chip shares his studio space with the public, transporting an abbreviation of his treetop studio-sanctuary at his home in St. Louis County to the gallery. Viewers can walk into Chip’s world and stand amongst the exuberant variety of objects and ideas that fuel his practice: collections, collages, toys, sketches, clippings, an auto violin, a boy’s letter to Santa Claus proclaiming his goodness, a faceoff between Mickey and a real mouse, mannequins, maquettes, photographs, gatherings of memory infused eye candy. The mysterious arrangements and surprising juxtapositions installed in the two gallery spaces encourage the unconscious mind to kick in and transport viewers to exciting new realms of the imagination. This first-hand glimpse into Chip’s creative mind is a unique opportunity to learn about wellsprings and the artistic process.

Following the studio experience in the Front Room of the gallery, viewers can walk to the Project Room where Chip’s sculptures are displayed. A dramatic contrast to the chaos of the studio space, this room represents the result of his artistic process. Here, viewers can appreciate each sculpture with the added understanding of the infinite web of ideas beneath the surface. This show engages viewers with works of art from the perspective of the artist, an experience that no lovers of art should miss.

Chip’s exhibition coincides with the Second Annual Beacon Festival, running from May 30th through June 6th. A full schedule of the festival is available at www.stlbeacon.org/festival. There will be a special celebration for the artist during the festival on Tuesday, May 31st, at 5:30 p.m. at Bruno David Gallery. The event is free and open to the public.

In the Media Room, the gallery presents a new video work by Ben Weiner titled Na + (aq) + C5H8NO → (aq) NaC5H8NO4(s). Weiner’s new body of work has given way to a collection of stop-motion videos. Composed of thousands of photographs of synthetic materials, these videos are constructed like moving paintings. While his paintings are based on one or several photographic images, Weiner’s videos assemble a long series of photographs into a narrative of abstracted imagery. Each image in the video amplifies the texture, luminosity and elasticity of a material in order to strip it of its function and focus on its inherent illusionistic properties. As viewers, we watch in awe as the vaguely familiar substances coalesce into a mysterious flow of abstraction.

On the BDG East-Wall, the gallery presents a temporary life-size woodblocks and paper cutouts installation by Swoon (Caledonia Curry). Several other cutouts will be located around the city of St. Louis. The installation is in conjunction with the SGC International Conference hosted by Washington University in St. Louis - Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts. The installation will be up until fully disintegrated.

Hoffman Lachance Contemporary: Friday, 6 May 2011

May 6th - May 28th 2011
Opening reception May 6th from 6pm - 10pm
Group show Curated by Michael Wille

Ruptures: Zachary Buchner - Melissa Oresky - Michael Perrone - Thomas Vance - Jeffrey Cortland Jones Linnea Paskow - Trew Schreifer - Michael Wille - Gianna Commito - Jared Sprecher - John Kissick -

Ruptures includes the paintings of eleven contemporary artists who each thinks progressively about painting and abstraction. As I see it, each artist invests in her/his own studio practice, making paintings that are similarly engaged in what the image is about in addition to how it visually participates in the contemporary dialogue of abstract painting. I have chosen painters whose works function as ruptures in the seams of contemporary abstraction. These paintings assert themselves based on their own value system, and force you to slow down and take notice. These paintings seek pathways to both engage in the large, complicated history of abstract painting but also fight to find one's own stance in relation to it. This exhibition boasts a vast range of work from the crudely drawn to the overtly composed, from the beautiful orchestration of color to the seemingly casual look of another.

Alison Jackson: Kate and Wills (officer)
April 9 - 29, 2011
High Tea Reception: Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 3pm-5pm
Hours: By appointment only.

Alison Jackson's photography examines the modern cult of the celebrity by showing them ostensibly caught unawares, revealing what we imagine behind closed doors. The work hovers between parody and realism by seeming to break down the carefully masked private lives of public figures. But of course all the figures in her photographs are dopplegangers. Her eye turns the magical celebrity image around and makes it palpable in its inherent absurdity asking us the question: What can the public know of people whom they do not, in
fact,know?

Bonsack Gallery: Friday, 13 May 2011

The exhibit, “Untold Stories: Photo-collages by Sandra Matthews,” will be on display in the
Bonsack Gallery from April 15 through May 13.

Two projects that explore fragments of narrative in different ways are represented in the larger
“Untold Stories” exhibit. The pieces in the “Homeland Scrolls” series are made up of layered
landscape elements, resembling an archeology of buried histories. The “Timelines” series
includes portraits of individuals made over intervals of months, years or decades. Their implicit
personal narratives are set against a backdrop of newspaper fragments. Matthews states that in
both projects, she is interested in the partialness and complexity of what is transmitted between
one generation and the generations that follow.

All are invited to a public closing reception hosted by the artist from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, on Friday,
May 13. Regular gallery hours are 8 am to 6:30 pm, weekdays. The exhibit is free to the public.

Closing reception May 6, 2011 7PM - 11PM.

The Concrete Ocean Art Gallery invites you, this Friday evening, April 15, 2011, to our April exhibit "Paintings", by Andy Brandmeyer. The bold richness of Brandmeyer's documentary paintings of people, places, and ideas is achieved through his personal experiences, mark making, drawing, and paint application to create a physical history upon each canvas. These paintings are worthy of close inspection and contemplation, as not only is this young artist's painting style a joy to be absorbed, but also the relationships and potential meanings between the objects within the scene.

Louis Kelly, Carol Shapiro, Barb Steps, and Linda Yust are four photographers who complement each other’s work and enjoy each other’s individual strengths.

Kelly’s photographs range from evocative black and white seascapes to intense colorful close-ups of flowers. He explains that “Photography chose me, consumed me, overwhelmed me and set me on a visionary journey” which began in 1993 when he was taking photographs of construction progress for MetroLink. From mountains at twilight to a private courtyard overflowing with green plants and bright flowers, Shapiro’s photos can be profound and humorous at the same time. Steps photographs her travels with a deft hand. “In my photographs” she explains, “I share with others the little moments that, when captured, compose life.” Photography has been Yust’s passion for more than 20 years. An avid nature buff all her life, her favorite subjects include small animals, birds, flowers and rural scenes. Travel photography later became a large part of her portfolio.

JANE BIRDSALL-LANDER: The Poetry of Objects
April 29th through June 11th
Opening Reception Friday, April 29th, 5-8 p.m.
Gallery hours: Tuesday through Saturday 10-5pm.

In her recent sculptural wall pieces artist Jane Birdsall-Lander reconfigures found objects and then binds them together with pigment stained waxed linen thread to build a group of primal alphabet forms. Made from cast offs such as salvage wooden canes these pieces have the prehensile tension of primitive objects while at the same time they are elegant and seamlessly crafted. Conceptually the sculptures are inspired by the artist’s interest in the evolution of pictographs and ideographs into the modern alphabet as well as her desire to incorporate recycled artifacts into the sculptures. Her object and signs each designed to correspond with a letter and to the physical symbols from which that letter was derived project a hands width from the wall cast shadows on the wall above and below. The waxed linen thread that circles parts of the forms binds the past with the present in a way that makes sense on both an intuitive and an aesthetic level.

partly cloudy with a chance of scattered showers will feature the work of Mimi Kato. Her photographs deal with subjects and formats from historical Japanese art which traditionally depict seasons, nature, and landscapes crowded with people acting out the stories of each era. Adding her own contemporary twist and drawing upon her own childhood memories, Kato creates hybrid landscapes where her contemporary narratives reveal themselves.

Kato plays the roll of each character in these narratives herself. She sews the costumes, creates the scene, and directs the narrative, creating what she refers to as "one person theater". Her poses and gestures are influenced by the theatrical performances of Japanese comedy (Kyogen) and the contemporary Butoh style. The narratives in her photographs are based on stereotypes, extracting typical routines, accidents, and misadventures, which summarize common stories from the Japanese press. SLU Museum of Art: Friday, 15 April 2011

The Saint Louis University Museum of Art is pleased to host Yingzue Zuo: A Blend of Styles. The exhibition opens on Friday, April 15 with a 6 p.m. reception. The exhibition will continue until May 29.

Yingxue Zuo melds ancient techniques from his birthplace in China with those of contemporary Western practice. The Blend of Style exhibition features oil paintings that depict rural and industrial Chinese landscapes.

Zuo is driven by the intense urge to pursue a sense of evolutionary change and growth in his artwork, and considers the natural world as an infinite resource for his plein air style painting. He is inspired by the natural world, which he translates into works of art, ranging from sketches, oil paintings, woodblock prints, and Chinese ink paintings.

Luminary Center for the Arts: Friday, 8 April 2011

The Luminary Center for the Arts is pleased to present the international group exhibition How to Disappear, which brings together five innovative artists that offer divergent how-to manuals on dropping out of society, records of vanishment and satirical takes on the dissolution of self. The exhibition features work from Ben Alper, Young Hae-Chang's HEAVY INDUSTRIES, Cayetano Ferrer, Claire Fontaine, Tatiana Grigorenko and Seth Price.

Also opening in the installation space is Charles Gick's site-specific installation entitled Three Clouds in Waiting. Three Clouds places Gick's paintings within a barren landscape created by a thick slab of dried mud, offering new resonances between painting, sculpture and the natural environment.

Join us for the opening reception from 6-9pm on Friday, April 8th.

Jose Ferreira: Wandering Thomas
Opening Reception, Friday April 22 - 6-10 pm
April 22 - May 28 2011

Wandering Thomas will include a recent body of work in which Jose Ferreira explores the notion of doubt embodied as a state between belief and disbelief. Through a series of photographs and works on paper, he emphasizes a state of reality in which the mind remains suspended between two contradictory propositions, unable to assent to either. Wandering Thomas refers to Caravaggio's The Incredulity of Saint Thomas (c. 1602), where Thomas's only way of being convinced of Christ's resurrection is by probing his wounds. This concept is extended metaphorically to spaces in the city, which harbor a deep symbolic resonance of being in transition-spaces and states that are constantly in-between.

Doubt brings into question the notion of "reality". It is a common form of psychological discord, with the rational part of one's thought involved in weighing evidence, without which belief has no real substance. Søren Kierkegaard has suggested that, for one to truly possess belief, one would also require a questioning of those beliefs. Decisions in politics, ethics, and law, which frequently determine the course of individual life, place great importance on doubt, and often foster elaborate adversarial processes to carefully sort through the evidence.

The photographs in the exhibition present the viewer with tactile, yet evanescent phenomena, which privilege natural elements, confusing our sense of time and space. In these works, ephemeral, unpredictable veils of mist, smoke, and pollution often obscure the metropolis, such that the concrete is displaced by the temporal, the human-made dwarfed by the phenomenal, and the viewer is disarmed by a suddenly unfamiliar space.
