Framations: Saturday, 10 July 2010

Framations Art Gallery is pleased to announce new exhibits by regional artists Lisa Thomas and Linda Wilmes. These exhibits will open with a reception on July 10 from 1-4 pm. This reception as well as the exhibit, is free and open to the public. The exhibits will continue through August 8, 2010.

Lisa Thomas's drawings, primarily in colored pencil, focus on the details, often zooming in to highlight more discreet areas. She loves detail, even though she says the "the challenge of getting it just right" can be stressful. Thomas loves the results of blending and burnishing the colors to produce amazing effects like light and shadow, texture, and dimension. Most of her work is still life, but she also does commissioned pet portraits, and Celtic designs. The Celtic art is inspired by her family heritage, and of course, the detail of the complex design satisfies her desire for a good challenge.

After working in many different media, and for many years, Linda Wilmes has found the truest form of painting is direct from life, which is evident in the plein air painting process. There are no boundaries and no limitations, opening the door open wide for the creative process to work and grow. According to Wilmes, "As long as my artwork is evolving, the growth is evident in the finished painting. " The artistic process begins with an idea or vision to visually express the thoughts or feelings of the artist. The blank paper or canvas soon becomes the physical product of the minds’work. The artist leaves himself upon the canvas, woven through the colors of the paint, in the design, and the mood of the finished product. Wilmes demonstrates these techniques through her use of both Pastel and Watercolor.

Duane Reed Gallery: Friday, 25 June 2010

Duane Reed Gallery presents the latest work of John Garrett. Exhibition opens Friday, June 25th with a reception that evening 5 8pm. The exhibition will run through July 31st. Gallery hours: Tuesday through Saturday 10-5pm.

John Garrett suggests that “Art is a way of putting the world together” in his case with a complexity of pattern and color placement that becomes eye dazzling, even at times unsettling. His additive sensibility produces layers upon layers of intricate inner and outer space. He makes visually unpredictable chains of materials (a single piece contains elements of woven, wrapped, plaited, riveted, twisted, nailed, stitched and tied raw materials) into loose but ordered forms. Utilizing assorted nails, buttons, washers, copper rings, and steel springs, Garrett’s cascading forms create a matrix of shapes and associations for the eye to feast on. Each work of art is meticulously ordered to the point of obsession and exhibits a complex structure akin to writing. The rings in his wall pieces and their alternating patinas and groupings suggest a readable pattern. His work almost seems like an encoded text at times but is mainly about the visual interplay of disassociated forms.

RECESSION REJUVENATIONS
June 11 - August 28, 2010
Opening Reception: Friday, July 9 - 6 to 9 pm

Bruno David Gallery is pleased to present RECESSION REJUVENATIONS, a selection of recent works by the artists of the gallery. The current group exhibition is a testament to the resilience of the creative impulse in the face of economic adversity. Even as the global community is wracked by recession, political unrest, and enormous threats to the environment, artists remain committed to following their inspirations within the confines of their studios. This exhibition of small works represents the current artistic endeavors of St. Louis’ foremost contemporary artists and provides insight into some of the current trends and pulse of the local art community.
The confluence of distinguished art institutions with an array of innovative artists forms the basis of a vibrant arts scene in this metropolitan area. In addition to eminent visual arts establishments such as The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, the St. Louis Art Museum, the local arts scene is enriched by musical and performing arts at the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, The Fox Theatre, and the Saint Louis Blues Society. The artists featured in this exhibition are a testament to the vitality of the St. Louis art community during these challenging times. These are their personal visions realized.

Duane Reed Gallery: Friday, 10 September 2010

Duane Reed Gallery presents the latest work of acclaimed artist Mary Sprague. Exhibition opens
Friday, September 10th with a reception that evening 5 – 8pm. The exhibition will run through October 16th.

Gallery hours: Tuesday through Saturday 10-5pm.

Mary Sprague has been contemplating the nature of the rhinoceros. Known more recently for her humorous depictions of birds- Chickens and Eagles- her new body of work about the rhinoceros represents a departure in subject matter. In 1515 Albrecht Durer famously produced a woodcut of a rhinoceros based on a written description of an Indian rhino that had recently arrived in Lisbon. The resulting print looks like a fantastic military tank- as if the animal were wearing plate armor. Durer’s artistic mistake has remained the popular view of the exotic species: a tough thick-skinned brute. Even though we now understand the skin is as sensitive as our own, Sprague’s rhino also wear plate armor. Not, as in Durer’s case in error, but for an emotive and comic characterization making the animal look like a medieval knight. Sprague’s attitude toward the human figure explains this tendency: “The human figure- I’ve never been able to identify with it. I don’t do drawings of humans because they don’t tell you the truth.” In a similar way Durer’s mistake, which created a stunning representation of the armored rhino, still seems true to our eyes today. We know the print is a rhino despite the information being objectively wrong. Sprague explores this anthropomorphic truth by recasting skin into plate armor. With Sprague’s new work the rhino’s face and posture hint at familiar human emotions and obsessions. She transforms a herd of wild animals into human-like medieval armies, brooding kings and gallant knights. By toying with representations she plays with the objective information but still tells us something true about this majestic species.

Duane Reed Gallery: Friday, 10 September 2010

Duane Reed Gallery presents the latest work of artist Lucy Feller. Exhibition opens Friday, September 10 with a reception that evening 5 – 8pm. The exhibition will run through October 16
Gallery hours: Tuesday through Saturday 10-5pm.

Lucy Feller is known for her digitalized and small intimate customized post cards. Today electronics make communication constantly available and immediate keeping us connected to one another whether we like it or not. To some extend this makes letter writing and post cards a nostalgic and outdated form of communication. With Feller we see the processes reversed. She creates the pieces in this show using updated imaging technology to create nostalgic looking objects. She begins with vintage postcards that evoke scenes and memories from a past era,She then adds images from the modern world including celebrities and personal friends. Feller also utilizes light boxes in her designs. These begin when Feller adds vintage images from her large personal collection of vintage photographs to personal snapshots and photographs. She created this series as the templates for commissioned pieces through which families can create a 21st century family photo record.

Good Citizen Gallery: Friday, 30 July 2010

Good Citizen invites you to Killbox featuring sculptural installation by artist Noah Kirby.

Opening Reception Friday, July 30, 6-10pm
July 30 - August 28, 2010

Killbox, a sculptural installation by Noah Kirby, will open at Good Citizen on July 30th. Killbox is embedded with hyper militarized language, tactics, and procedures that dictate the formal structure of the exhibition. The primary sculpture is a representation of small squad tactical maneuvers and CQB (Close Quarters Battle) techniques. The sculpture itself is loosely based, both aesthetically and structurally, upon stealth technologies. Within the Killbox installation, Kirby will call upon theories of perception, specifically as they apply to covert operations and camouflage techniques. The installation and sculpture will work in tandem to transform the gallery and to create an experience that puts the viewer in a self-conscious position relative to a space, an object, and a culture. Kirby's work will extend to the Good Citizen Billboard, where Killbox will occupy the project space from July to September.

Mad Art: Friday, 18 June 2010

An opening Reception for work by Beth Jatcko, Nick Lang, Eric Nichols, and Curt von Diest will be on Friday, June 18, 2010, from 7:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m.

Beth Jatcko melds intense color and contrasting elements to form topographic landscapes that can be interpreted as either an inspection under the microscopic or a satellite view. The work explores life's minutia and our ability to step back and rediscover the aerial view. Beth's process starts with natural fibers that are hand-painted, then sewn and stuffed with a traditional sewing technique called Trapunto. She then carves relief shapes from high-density urethane, paints the surface to further create depth and constructs the forms into cohesion.

Nick Lang is a sculptor who works with a wide variety of materials and processes to convey personal narratives that explore incongruity, instinct and natural patterns. He relies on impulse and spontaneity to bring sculptural objects through a process of accretion. The results enable him to understand himself and reflect commonalities between humans.

Eric R. Nichols' current work is mixed media on paper. Layering two and three-dimensional imagery, Eric utilizing transitions to create the composition. The imagery in his work is not planned, it is discovered through the layering process. It focuses on the continuity of spontaneity, control and chance.

Curt von Diest is a photographic artist who strives to uncover the simple beauty in subjects that the casual passer-by might consider ugly or boring. His work recalls the early history of the medium when photography was a laborious process only mastered by the most dedicated of practitioners. His process is a fusion of old-world craftsmanship and contemporary digital techniques.

Mary Judge New Sculpture | Urformen: Past and Present
Opening Reception June 9, 5-7p

Shearburn Gallery presents new three-dimensional works by New York based artist Mary Judge. Best known for her powdered pigment drawing and sculpture in cast concrete, here the artist will present granite and limestone sculptures based on botanical forms. This work spins off from the sculpture bench designed for the Japanese Garden of the Missouri Botanical Garden, dedicated to Courtney Bean Obata to be dedicated in June 2010.

The title of the exhibition "Urformen" (meaning archetype) is the title of a book published by Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932) a German instructor of sculpture who used his remarkable photographs of plant studies to educate his students about design elements in nature.

Judge's work is about transformation through repetition and the border between image and object. Her works are sensual and easy to access but complex and invite contemplation. Her drawings, prints and sculptures use a modular structure format that both constrains and liberates the work. Often beginning with a central point, her most recent work explores the emotive power of the circle.

Prints included in Urformen: Past and Present were produced at Wildwood Press. These are unique print based works on handmade paper

Heterarchy: An Ordinary Adventure
Mostly new work by Amy VanDonsel

Opening Reception Saturday, June 12, 6PM - 11PM
June 12 - 27, 2010

Amy VanDonsel´s mostly new work indulges in worries about fixating on an obsession with obsessions. Mixed media paintings and installations, which incorporate a variety of materials and techniques, scrape away at an internal adventure. There´s something to be said for choking on the words. Heterarchy is the confession of a temporary apophenia addiction, and a hug, disguised as a shrug, for nerd girls.

Heterarchy is exhibited in the series beverlyear 2010, a yearlong dedication to women artists at Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts.

Globe Shaped
June 25 – Aug. 20, 2010
Opening Reception from 6-8 p.m., June 25, 2010

The exhibition series Globe Shaped brings five exhibitions together that explore the definition of diversity and how varying perspectives impact our decisions both as artists and people. The exhibit runs from June 25 through Aug. 20, 2010 with an opening reception from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, June 25, 2010.

Shifts in Perspective: Migrating Viewpoints
Shifts in Perspective: Migrating Viewpoints highlights the impact and effects that migration from one culture, or area, to another has had on one’s sense of identity, perception and emotion. Whether one's movement is voluntary or involuntary, the experience is emotional and ultimately life-changing. The 15 artists selected by juror Cileia Miranda Yuen are international, national, regional and local.

Regarding Place
The artists in Regarding Place offer a glimpse into the significance of how place defines one's sense of perception by representing an idea of a place, whether it is a sofa, a city map, conversations overheard or portraits of loved ones. Regarding Place was juried by Jana Harper. She selected 24 artists to participate.

Pieces
Pieces is a solo exhibition by Phil Jarvis. Using wood, metal, plastic and paint, Jarvis will assemble thirteen individual paintings to form a collective composition.

In the Chidren's Gallery
Conversation of Images
For the past several months students at Central Visual & Performing Arts High School and at Hazelwood Central High School exchanged art trading cards (2.5 inch by 3.5 inch original drawings or paintings) with one another. The students looked at each others’ cards, then replied artistically to each others’ images and ideas. As this process continued, ideas accumulated and themes emerged. When the banks of images reached critical mass, the students made full, gallery-size pieces of artwork based on the ideas on their cards. The whole process culminates in this show.

Marshall Plan: The Intra European Poster Competition of 1950
Our New Members Gallery hosts a selection of posters from the Marshall Plan Poster Contest. In the fall of 1950, the Intra-European Cooperation for a Better Standard of Living Poster Contest was held throughout Europe whereby artists were encouraged to submit posters that represented the theme of cooperation and economic recovery. More than 10,000 pieces were submitted from various countries. A panel of twelve graphic artists, each representing a different Marshall Plan country served as judges. The St. Louis Artists' Guild will be exhibiting 20 out of 25 of the posters. This collection is on loan from by Joe and Vicki Stone of Foristell, Missouri and the exhibit is curated by one of the Guild's board members Don Occhi.
