LUISA MESA
September 11 – October 10, 2009
Opening Reception Friday, September 11th from 5-8 pm

In her work, Mesa explores the nature of human consciousness and the relationship of Individuals to the larger picture, through mixed media, such as enamel, acrylic, oil, digital images and resin, among others. The process of repetitive drawing is the essence of the work; the lines in the work are a metaphor for the interconnectedness of all things, and the layers allude to the multidimensionality and different levels of our existence.

Sun Smith-Foret SILVER SCREEN QUILTS: Art about Movies
September 11 – October 10, 2009
Opening Reception To Meet the Artist
Friday, September 11th from 5-8 pm; Gallery hours: Tuesday through Saturday 10-6pm.

Silver Screen Quilts are works of cloth, paint and mixed media referencing film and cinema. The African American textile technique of strip piecing seems an appropriate vehicle with which to structure compelling graphic imagery with idea stimulated by mass media and what is often referred to as entertainment. Both forms, quilts and films, represent human expression from the popular domain, both are labor intensive requiring collaborative effort over significant periods of time, both seek to expand and open the world of visual and conceptual idea to people hungry for a connection with each other. By joining films and quilts in a hybrid form that includes painting, embroidery and appliqué, I seek to marry disparate aesthetic strivings from the domain of popular culture.

This exhibition is in conjunction with Innovations in Textiles 8. Innovations in Textiles 8 is a biennial collaborative event in St. Louis, MO, that investigates the state of contemporary textile arts. Nineteen nonprofit and private arts organizations join forces to present exhibitions related to fiber art created by national and international artists.

Na Xin at the ART & DESIGN BLDG. GALLERY

You are invited to STEP INTO NATURE (my paintings) and STEP INTO MY CHILDHOOD (my sculptures) Visit me at the opening reception THIS FRIDAY, Aug. 28, from 6:00pm - 8:00pm or come during the gallery dates of Aug. 24-Sept. 5, open daily from 9 am-5 pm in the ART & DESIGN BUILDING GALLERY.

My passion for art started in my childhood in collecting shiny button, pretty picture, and colorful candy wrap. I carved mini-furniture with chalks, made bubble-gum figures and apple-seeds animals. As I grew older, I was intoxicated in creating things and exploring beauty.

Beauty in my eye are from different angles and different forms: the first beam of sun light that comes through clouds; leaves dancing in wind; animals and human bounding into nature. My works catch those sensitive moments with thick paint and rich colors directly out from the tube to give the sense of magnificent imagination. My paints extend to the covered frame to make a two dimensional work into a three dimensional looking. Each piece of my work cuts out a piece of nature and let the viewer to transform the work freely into space so that viewer can breathe it and become part of it. Primitive simplicity and purity is the true essence of nature and that is also what I pursuit for.

Max Scharf: Radiant Harmonies

The exhibition opens with a reception on Friday, September 4 at 5:30 p.m., and will continue until Sunday, October 18, 2009.

Through a career that spanned five decades, Max Scharf became known for his radiant color harmonies. Characterized by brilliant color, his art was a celebration of the world around him which he expressed through striking color combinations. Scharf's paintings inspire intense movement through pockets of swirls and twirling colors, while others instill a quieter reflective energy hidden just beneath the surface of more delicate movement, allowing color to speak for itself. Scharf's style of painting is indebted to late 19th century sources, especially Van Gogh. He borrowed lightness from the Impressionists; a bold palette from the Post-Impressionists and Fauves; and an added intensity all his own.

HUNT GALLERY
The Unobserved World
AUGUST 28 – SEPTEMBER 29, 2009
Friday, AUGUST 28, 2009: Screening: 6:32pm-6:47pm Reception: 6pm-8pm. Hours: Monday - Saturday 10am – 4pm or by appointment.

The Hunt Gallery is pleased to present The Unobserved World, an exhibition where the gallery will function as a laboratory for an experiment that will ultimately bring together elements of documentation, performance, and video while pushing curatorial boundaries. The Unobserved World poses the age-old question to its potential audience: If a tree falls in a forest, and there is no one there to hear it, does it make a sound?

By way of limitation and documentation, The Unobserved World will either answer the commonsense answer as yes, it did happen and there were a few people there to see it or prove the metaphysical answer as no, because I didn't go to the Hunt Gallery to witness the tree falling, so therefore it doesn't exist! This project also hopes to create a conceptual vibration by poking fun at the possibility of its unperceived existence; it is not the absence of "artwork," the sound of a tree crashing to the ground or the taste of cold beer that should be considered, but rather the absence of awareness of objects and personal physical perception of these events.

The film recorded during the course of the project will generate a new video using only the imagery from the viewers and their reaction to what they have witnessed, which is to specifically highlight the ephemeral nature of performance and event and the sound it makes through observation, participation and experience.

Elements: The Art of Textile Collage
Barbara Simon, curator
September 11-October 25, 2009
FREE Opening Reception on Friday, September 11, 6-8pm

This exhibition is part of Innovations in Textiles 8, a city-wide collaborative event.

Simon has selected five artists who produce creative work using textile collage. The artists featured are Bob Adams, Luanne Rimel, Joan Schulze, Fran Skiles, and Barbara Lee Smith. “Each of these artists alter or enhance their fabrics and papers with surface design techniques using dye, paint, discharge, transfer, silkscreen and digital technology, and often embellishing the work with hand stitching and text,” says Simon. “The medium of collage offers artists the freedom to manipulate diverse elements and make changes until they perceive balance and have created a new and satisfying work.”

Opening concurrently in the Charak Gallery is Not All Together Whole, featuring the work of Pat Owoc. There is a strong element of storytelling in her work, which “deals with memory, both real and invented, and land, both real and imagined.” The stories told by Owoc’s impressionistic, dream-like landscapes will awaken memories in her viewers.

ABSTRAKT: Thursday, 27 August 2009

Benton Park's thriving new art gallery, ABSTRAKT and College Bound are proud to announce the next exhibiting artist, Kennedy Yanko. Yanko's exhibit, Wu-Wei (Chinese phrase loosely translated as "Active inactivity to become one with the Tao") is a celebration of vibrant colors and rich textures.

This event will run from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm on August 27. In addition to College Bound, ABSTRAKT has partnered with ALIVE Magazine to help capture this colorful evening. Artists and art enthusiasts are encouraged to celebrate and enjoy this unique experience while giving back to the community. A portion of the proceeds will go toward College Bound.

Yanko describes her artistic interpretation of her work from the Wu-Wei collection, "It is an emptiness that is absolute fullness, allowing the universe to be expressed as it is, without interference from individual beliefs, perceptions or limitations. Wu-Wei is the art of joyful surrender...surrender to this moment, every moment. It is the effortless, boundless allowing of that which Is...to Be. When I paint, I enter the gap between the `doing' and the `being'. I see nothing with my eyes. My stillness understands. My senses are quiet, my spirit free to follow the flow, guided by the universe, into the divine place of creation. The paint settles where it may, as the non-act of allowing every stroke of the brush of life to be what it is, accepting it without resistance, judgment or expectation. It is my now saying `Yes!' to what Is."

College Bound provides promising high school students from under-resourced backgrounds with the academic enrichment, social support and life skills needed to apply, matriculate and succeed in four year colleges.

GRAFICA FINE ART SHOWS MALERICH’S LIFE IN STITCHES
This isn’t your Grandma’s embroidery!

Grafica Fine Art announces a showing of the dramatic and very personal embroidery art of Lee Malerich. Melerich’s works are dazzling and intricate – the brilliant colors and complex shapes entwined within each image draw the eye and hold it; but, Lee’s representational works depict slices of her life and lay bare complicated emotions.

Each image is small (approximately 5” x 5”) but the impact is big. Even a casual observer is
drawn into a story that seems to hold more questions than answers. Some concepts are black
and white (a common theme in Malerich’s work) – most are variegated and often vivid.
Two non-representational works are included. In these works, Malerich uses the texture of
carefully chosen and placed fabrics to complement her incredibly precise stitches.

Bound Lines: an installation by Mi-Kyoung Lee.
August 28, 2009 - January 17, 2010
FREE Opening Reception on Friday, August 28, 6 – 9pm
This exhibition is in conjunction with Innovations in Textiles 8, a collaborative city wide investigation of textile art in 19 area galleries.

Watch Mi-Kyoung Lee create her installation in the gallery, Wednesday, August 26 through Friday, August 28.

Bound Lines, Mi-Kyoung Lee’s site-specific installation, features large-scale sculptures as well as wall pieces. Her wall pieces, which she refers to as “material drawings,” are small line drawings of natural forms made out of wool felt, cotton balls, silk and wax.

Through knotting lines of monofilament (a thin string made from a single fiber), human hair, thread and wax, Lee’s work speaks delicately to how we are all connected to each other. Bound Lines is “a portrait of my recent awareness of human connections as a mother,” explains Lee. “The process of connecting small threads together becomes a metaphor for human existence.”

LESLIE LASKEY: Tango
Opening Reception: Friday, September 11, from 6 to 9 pm
September 11 – October 24, 2009. A fully illustrated catalogue with an essay by Jim Harris accompanies the exhibition.

Project Room and Front Room: Legacy: The Work of Laskey’s Former Students
Media Room: Dickson Beall: FRAMES and MOVEMENTS: The Artist in Society: Who, What, Where, When and Why?

The eclectic artist is presenting a series of paintings and drawings inspired by the Argentinean dance. Tango has been a great inspiration for artists, whether they are musicians, filmmakers or visual artists. His fascination for Tango isn’t surprising, when one looks at his previous work. Leslie Laskey has already explored the subject in 2006. His series of flower digital prints evoked the sensuality of the dance with hot colors and powerful graphic gestures.

In the Media Room, video artist Dickson Beall presents a single-channel video titled “FRAMES AND MOVEMENTS: The Artist in Society: Who, What,Where, When and Why?” This 90 seconds video created in 2009 expands the search of who is an artist. Who is an artist? Through what frames does the artist see? How do place and visual marks in time shape movements? Why does the artist make art? From the artist in the cave to the artist in the concept, this video animation plays with those questions and draws out a history of art — in 90 seconds, more or less — about the time it takes to look at a single piece of art.

Duane Reed Gallery: Friday, 20 November 2009

Dale Chihuly Opening Reception Friday, November 20th from 5-8 pm. The exhibition will run through January 30th.

Chihuly’s distinctive glass sculpture owes much to the grand tradition of Renaissance era Venetian glass, yet his work squarely sits in the modern avant-garde. In this visionary leap Chihuly’s rare ability to conceive of sculptural glass on a monumental scale revolutionized the medium. The luscious form of Chihuly’s 1 ton “Icicle Chandelier” enlivens the entire gallery space transforming it into a rococo crystal interior -bathing 4,000 square feet in spectacular refracting light and liquid colors. The chandelier, is flanked by a wall of “Persian” series glass which evokes the archeological treasures of the Middle East. Formed from a complex threading of glass, the “Persian” series connotes a lost era of refinement and luxury, an exotic civilization of advanced science, calligraphic mastery, hanging gardens, tapestry carpets and metaphysical love poems. Chihuly’s fascination with “dazzling threaded patterns to create basket weaves, waffled designs, and combed decorations” provides an apt
metaphor for the history of culture itself.
