Snowflake: Friday, 26 June 2009

Please join us Friday, June 26 from 7-10 pm for our newest exhibition, A New Currency.

Art often acts as a sign of the times and the effect of today's economy on the art market seems to be no exception. The current recession has hit it hard, affecting the actions of artists, curators, critics and buyers. Directed by curator Dan Cameron (Prospect New Orleans), a group of thirty-one MFA students at the School of Visuals Arts have developed the exhibition A New Currency as an artist's response to these changing economic circumstances on the contemporary art community.

A New Currency in St. Louis will be a part of the global impact of the exhibition, joining cities around the world such as Los Angeles, D.C., Seoul and Taipei, to explore the current trends and feelings of artists in each city. Opening on June 26th, 7 – 10 pm at Snowflake, the exhibition will feature the art of several artists who are working to make a career in this tough economy.Works by Bruce Burton, Nate Chung, Eric Hall, Mike Schuh and Jennifer Wilkey are featured in the exhibition.

Curated by Cole Root and Amy Blomme, A New Currency aims to explore today's artists, as they begin to develop their own careers and respond to the newest trends in the contemporary art community. As the galleries that could once jumpstart a career, struggle during this recession, the weight is now left more heavily on each individual artist. All of the pieces in the exhibition give an artist's insight into their perception of what currency is to them and how it affects their work.

Looking at each of these artists's perspective of what is current in our artistic community; A New Currency shows the power of the individual artist to define his or her own career and share with the rest of us a sign of the times.

Runs through July 20th. Hours: Saturdays, 11 am to 3 pm, Free and Open to the Public

Craig Norton: Shot and Killed
Closing this Weekend

Please join us Friday, June 19, from 6 - 8 pm, for cocktails and a final view of this powerful exhibition. The exhibition will also be on view Saturday, June 20, from 10 am - 5 pm.

Craig Norton makes work of remarkable directness. His ideas arrive channeled through his incredibly fine skills as a draftsman. Amazingly, he uses only a 29 cent Bic pen as a drawing implement to draw photorealistic faces with a stippling technique. Hundreds of thousands of dots give the faces realism and depth. Wallpaper collages build the clothes of the figures. Most recently, Norton's pieces have consisted of large-scale vignettes involving dozens of figures per scene.

TOM BIANCHI: MEMORIES OF FIRE ISLAND
Limited Edition Archival Prints from SX-70 Polaroids

DAVID LANCASTER: PLEASE GOD, MAKE ME NOT QUEER
Oil on studded aluminum paintings and sculpture

TOM BIANCHI: MEMORIES OF FIRE ISLAND

Before gay marriage, before "don't ask-don't tell," before AIDS, and even before Stonewall... there was Fire Island. Part Garden of Eden, part Sodom and Gomorah, this tiny little barrier to Long Island, just south of the Hamptons, was as much a state of mind as it was a destination. Synonymous with freedom to gays around the word, Fire Island was the ultimate mecca where gays and lesbians who often lived their lives in secret, were free to be who they were, among their own, living and playing without judgment or scorn. Photographer Tom Bianchi captured that era on film. Using a Polaroid SX-70, Tom Bianchi shot more than 6,000 images of his summers in the Pines.

Over 24 images from Memories of Fire Island and a selection of Bianchi's classic black and white nudes will be on view at PHD Gallery from June 27 through August 15, 2009, with an opening reception Saturday, June 27 at 7:00 pm. The artist will attend and will sign copies of his books.

DAVID LANCASTER: "Please God, Make Me Not Queer"

"Give me chastity... but not yet." St. Augustine (354-430), Bishop of Hippo and one of the major figures of early Christianity, uttered this famous prayer in his struggle to gain mastery over his earthly desires. In the spirit of brazen honesty with which Augustine addressed his deity, David Lancaster proposes a collection of modern prayers, painted in oil on aluminum, designed to explore and question the nature of communication with the divine. Sad, bold, frank and funny, the prayers challenge our collective notions of supplication and gratitude--what we should ask of an omnipotent God and for what we should give thanks--and the very idea that prayer is a catalyst for divine action.

Ten of Lancaster's studded aluminum paintings and sculpture will be on view in PHD's Portfolio Gallery. The text of each prayer, rendered without vowels or word breaks (in the manner of early biblical manuscripts), surrounds the nude supplicant, painted in oil on aluminum, the whole nailed to a plywood substrate with brass escutcheon pins, reminiscent of Christian icon paintings and stained glass windows.

Curiosa Elegante
"The art of sensual imagination"

The art of sensual imagination is Erica Kavanagh's attempt to paint the answers to the forever elusive questions of sensuality. Capturing on canvas, those fleeting moments which describe a universal sensuality, appreciated by both men and women alike but for different reasons.

How often do we look into the mirror and focus on the things we want to change about our reflection? What if instead of thinking change, we embraced those things? The human figure is one of Gods masterpieces. In all shapes, sizes, and colors, we are each perfectly unique and beautiful. Kavanagh's paintings portray those all-too-brief moments when inner beauty shines the brightest. Emotional moments which do not derive strength from aesthetic appeal alone. Kavanagh evokes this emotion by skillfully manipulating the relationships between color and value, shape and space, movement and balance. Substituting a conventional way of copying nature with interpretation, Kavanagh's work ignites an emotion in each viewer while communication with all.

Opening Reception Friday, June !9th, 5-8 pm.
June 19-July 31, 2009
Gallery hours: Tuesday through Friday 10am - 6pm, Saturday 11am - 5pm, and by appointment.

The Duane Reed Gallery is excited to present the work of St. Louis painter, Nancy Rice. The “Dark Reflections” series explores the many layers of visual perception produced by light, shadows and reflections on a variety of objects, images, and experiences. As the empirical world is ordered by geometry, so are my paintings. Each plane or rectangle records a specific time in a single location. Chairs move as conversations end, branches bend and break and we have to determine what is real and what is only a reflection. Nancy Newman Rice employs a pointillist technique to apply paint not only to enhance the intricacy of the images but also the vibrancy of the colors.

Four Fired: Tip Toland, Misty Gamble, Cynthia Consentino, Beverly Mayeri
Opening Reception To Meet the Artists Friday, June !9th, 5-8 pm.
June 19-July 31, 2009
Gallery hours: Tuesday through Friday 10am - 6pm, Saturday 11am - 5pm, and by appointment.

Four Fired, a group exhibition featuring the work four female artists working in clay, whose figurative work transcends the clay tradition by exploring the human condition. Beautifully crafted and wildly imaginative work that addresses current issues such as identity, consumption, human desire and fear will be featured.

Tip Toland’s hauntingly realistic works evoke reaction as they show humanity in all states and at all ages. The synthetic hair and wax lips Toland uses add a further life-like quality to her brutally honest figures. Beverly Mayeri’s dream-like sculptures are subtlety, yet richly painted rather than glazed. She explores the contradiction and ever-changing sides of oneself, one’s yearnings and fear, strengths and fragility in her work. Consentino and Gamble look more to society and cultural mores for inspiration. Gamble’s eccentric personalities question the perception of normalcy and appropriateness of human and social behaviors, while Consentino layers her works with references to stories and metaphor to comment on “dualities and apparent incongruities" within gender and societal roles.

Alison Ouellette-Kirby: Home From Work To Find Your Spaniel Turned Into A Wolf
July 31 - August 29, 2009

Alison Ouellette-Kirby’s upcoming show Home From Work To Find Your Spaniel Turned Into A Wolf takes a critical look at the underlying concepts and definition of “home.” Her sculptures focus on the iconic home from the board game Monopoly™, a form she is obsessed with and a
game she hated as a child. A game whose premise she describes as presenting “robber-baron style capitalism as something light and fun.” A theme that seems all too familiar in the current political and economic climate and its relationship to one’s “home.”

Alongside political motives are Alison’s personal definitions of “home” and how these ideas shift with age and geography. Alison’s work investigates how this ever-changing definition has a direct impact on the physical and psychological landscape of the country. Alison’s Canadian background creates a thinly veiled difference between her and her surrounding community; a foreigner who is not quite foreign enough.

SCHMIDT CONTEMPORARY ART

Stuart Arends
Olivia Lahs-Gonzales

June 12 - July 11, 2009
Opening Reception Friday, June 12, 5:00-8:00 PM

Hours: Wednesday-Friday, 12-5; Saturday 10-4

Stuart Arends will be showing work from two recent series. The A-Frames are finely milled aluminum boxes 6 x 6 x 2.5” which the artist paints in hard edged geometric formats; the Big Art pieces are much smaller wooden boxes painted more loosely in his signature style which take their name from the fact that although they are physically small they project themselves as eloquently as large paintings when given the opportunity and the proper space.

The timing is perfect for this exhibition. These particular A-Frames will eventually be heading to a museum exhibition in Italy; other works from this series will be featured in two booths at Art Basel. Other works of the same size as the Big Art pieces will be at Basel as well - but not any from this series which is very personal to the artist who is showing work from this series for the first time.

Olivia Lahs-Gonzales, well known for her photography, will be exhibiting one of her large scale photographs and a series of recent drawings which reflect her ongoing passion for the forms and energies found in the world of nature.

At times appearing quiet - just a few subtle lines of watercolor - and at other time using a variety of media in energetic bursts Lahs-Gonzales works on paper allow her hand to accomplish the same feelings and emotions that her eye has shown us for many years through the lens of her camera.

Khara Koffel: later rather than sooner
Opening Reception: Friday, June 12 6pm - 10pm
June 12 - July 11, 2009

Khara Koffel pulls inspiration from personal stories, anecdotes, and memories creating installations using specific objects related to her past and present. These installations have included portraits of family members out of such diverse materials as paperclips, eggshells, and cocktail umbrellas. For Koffel, these materials carry a specific relevance to her own stories but remain approachable to a wide range of viewers. Koffel’s work speaks to the power of seemingly banal objects to spark a memory, recall an emotion, and tell a story. Her care and handling of these materials allow them to become aesthetically pleasing arrangements that invite the viewer into unique shared experiences.

The exhibition "Time Well Spent" documents the collaboration between artists from each category: five established artists and five budding artists, ages 6 to 17. Although different in age and experience, the pairs worked together as peers rather than as teacher and student. "I wanted them to influence each other with their different approaches," said Tom Reed, the curator of the exhibition. "The goal was to give equal significance to the process of the collaboration as to the work that resulted from it."

"Collaboration offers the opportunity to step outside yourself, outside your comfort zone, into the new or unfamiliar," said Lisa Bulawsky, one of the participating artists. "But it also forces connections and commonalities to arise. Faith and I began our work together by imaging the mundane as a common point. As the work has continued to develop, those images have evolved to encompass a reflection of our collaborative process itself."

Additionally, a dedication ceremony for a new public art piece, which will flank the entryway to RAC's Cultural Resource Center, will take place at 6 p.m. The work, titled Support System, was commissioned in celebration of the Center's fifth anniversary and underscores RAC's ongoing commitment to public art and local artists.

Six local artists and the Laumeier staff are busy preparing for Built, the 2009 Kranzberg Exhibition which opens June 5 at 6 p.m.¨For only the second time, the Kranzberg show features multiple artists who are transforming the indoor galleries into five unique installations.

According to Kim Humphries, Laumeier's Director of Exhibitions and Collections, "All the work in Built is site-specific – some of it solidly-so, literally constructed into and onto the galleries."

Plan to attend the June 5 opening and see Stan Chisholm's installation as well as work by Sarah Frost, Craig Norton, Mike Behle and Cameron Fuller & Sarah Paulsen in what Post-Dispatch Visual Arts Critic David Bonetti called, "the most promising show opening this summer."
