Atrium Gallery: Friday, 17 October 2008

Christopher Tanner
Opening Exhibition, "Give Me the Cobra Jewel"

You are cordially invited to the opening of Atrium's new gallery at 4728 McPherson Avenue. Opening this fall season with an exciting dazzling, and tantalizing exhibition featuring New York artist, Christopher Tanner. Carolyn Miles, Founder, Owner, and Director, is pleased that Atrium will celebrate its 22nd Anniversary, with an elegant new space, a new to St. Louis international artist, a spectacular Opening Exhibition featuring incredibly brilliant (as in sparkle) paintings, drawings and collages. "Give Me the Cobra Jewel" will open with a Reception on Friday, October 17, 6-9pm and will include a lively musical performance piece by the artist.

Tanner comes from a background in music and theater, as well as art, and his lavish, opulent works present exuberance with multifaceted surfaces, reflections, and references that are wonderfully seductive and provocative for their flair and deeply felt emotion. Paint, sequins, elaborate designs, color saturated surfaces, as well as subtle monochromatic black and white works send viewers on a roller coaster of impressions. Paired with drawings (also including glitter) on vintage wallpaper, this body of work is very rich aesthetically, emotionally and intellectually.

The exhibition will run from October 17-November 30.
Gallery Hours are Wednesday-Saturday 10-6, Sunday, noon-4 and Tuesday by appointment.

Cecille R. Hunt Gallery: 3 October 2008

JASON HACKENWERTH
SEPTEMBER 26 OCTOBER 31, 2008
Opening Reception: Friday, October 3, 2008 6pm-8pm
Hours: Monday - Friday 10am 4pm or by appointment.

The Cecille R. Hunt Gallery is pleased to present recent work by New York based artist Jason Hackenwerth. Hackenwerth rigorously constructs complex balloon creations, which a spirit of wonder and oddity. Inspired by the forms of sea creatures, fossils, and giant prehistoric creatures, Hackenwerth’s forms evoke universal themes of life, birth and death. To build his monumental biomorphic sculpture, Hackenwerth knots and shapes hundreds of brightly colored inflated balloons into magical and ephemeral configurations and forms of lively cobbled creatures. The kinetic installations are made up of organic, latex neon forms, reminiscent of anemones and urchins. In addition, his large-scale photographs are meant to capture the sculptures in their most vibrant condition. They are set in what could be post-apocalyptic landscapes while simultaneously functioning as costumes they capture a moment of the performance. As wearable
sculpture, he temporarily inserts a soul into his creations, the works are at-once full of life and breath. Predictably, each tendril loses both the trapped air and their sense of vibrancy, the work visibly wilts over the course of the exhibition, their ephemeral nature reflects our own lives. They employ an eerie cinematic quality, portraying animated attack scenes, all acting as a philosophical inquiry into the nature of mortality.

Personal Allegories: William LaChance. Jesse Thomas, Ian Weaver

These three artists all work in the figurative narrative painting style that hovers somewhere between realism and surrealism. William LaChance uses real and imagined spaces to weave his images. Jesse Thomas shows us dream worlds that represent new ways of representation using a
juxtaposition of pop imagery and references to art history. Ian Weaver's vision incorporates installation and painting in which he opposes memory and sentimentality with the harshness of documentation and bleak cityscapes.

Main Gallery I WILLIAM GRIFFIN: Recent Paintings
Project Room I PATRICIA OLYNYK: Probe
Front Room I MARGARET ADAMS: Recent Paintings
New Media Room I JESSICA ROGEN: Let Me Entertain You
OCTOBER 3 – 25, 2008

Bruno David Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings by William Griffin in the main gallery. William Griffin’s most recent work blends the traditions of Old Masters with 21st century sensibility. He paints human figures as forms and shapes, touching and reacting in sensual gestures. By using the figure’s power to express strong physical and emotional content, and by reducing the informational material, Griffin abstracts his images – much as a photographer or filmmaker crops and frames observed phenomena and concepts. The stylish, large-scale oil paintings he creates are within the long tradition of Western painting and are influenced by the early 20th century artists’ movement away from representational work, yet they are by no means retroactive. A fully illustrated catalog accompanies this exhibition.

In the Project Room, Patricia Olynyk is presenting an exhibition of photographs created during a recent residency as a Francis Wood Fellow at the College Physicians—Mütter Museum in Philadelphia. Her work continues to investigate the often-tenuous relationships between human culture, science and nature, and frequently calls upon viewers to expand their awareness of the worlds they inhabit — whether those worlds are their own bodies or the spaces that surround them. In her latest series, entitled “Probe,” she utilizes a vast inventory of bizarre prosthetic devices and medical instruments collected for their historical value in order to comment on the human desire to fetishize and even anthropomorphize objects used to supplement or probe the human body. Through her photographs, Olynyk draws together both the historical and modern
desire to control and manipulate our corporeal selves.

In the Front Room, Margaret Adams is showing her recent work in an exhibition titled “Blindness”. Her recent work has been inspired by the novel Blindness by Jose Saramago. In his novel, Saramago imagined a world gradually overwhelmed by a plague of white blindness, which was used as a metaphor for not seeing, for not being aware of one’s self and one’s surroundings, psychologically or philosophically. Through contemplation and questioning of their blindness, Saramago’s characters ultimately understand themselves in ways previously unknown, and it is this new insight that precedes the gradual return of some kind of normal vision. At the end of the novel, one of the characters concludes, “I don’t think we did go blind, I think
we are blind, Blind but seeing, Blind people who can see, but do not.” (Saramago 326). The simultaneity of seeing and not seeing and the dynamic movement between these two states of being is a mystery underlying the human condition.

In the New Media Room, video artist Jessica Rogen presents a short video. Let Me Entertain You began with the idea of a reverse striptease. A partially clothed woman is proffered for the viewer's pleasure; her body language beckons invitingly as she slowly, sensuously begins to button up her shirt. The contradiction between the reality and the style of her actions
taunts and criticizes the viewer, while the inherent humor of her playful tease and the ridiculousness of the result helps to cut its bite. By denying access to her body, the woman repossesses herself and refuses to be made into an object. She piles clothing on in excess, mocking the gaze that would undress her while acknowledging the tradition of the naked woman as object in both art history and pornography.

THIRD DEGREE EAST GALLERY: Handcrafted Glass Beads: St. Louis Lampworkers Society

September 19 - October 14

Members of the St. Louis Lampworkers Society strut their stuff in this exhibit. Lampworking (also called flameworking) is a type of glasswork that uses a torch to melt rods and tubes of clear and colored glass. The glass is then formed by blowing and shaping with a variety of tools and hand movements. Lampworking has been practiced since ancient times and became widely practiced in Murano, Italy in the 14th century. But it wasn't until the late 1960s that lampwork became recognized as a serious art form. To learn more about the St. Louis Lampworkers Society, visit www.stlouisbead.com.

Third Fridays at Third Degree are free, family-friendly events. Thirsty? Cash bar provided. Third Degree Glass is smack dab between University City's Loop and the Central West End. For more info: www.stlglass.com or 314-367-452.

BOOK SIGNING RECEPTION AT GRAFICA FINE ART
Marilynne Bradley’s “St. Louis in Watercolor: The Architecture of a City”

On Friday, November 7 from 6-9 pm there will be a book signing reception for Marilynne Bradley’s new book "St. Louis in Watercolor: The Architecture of a City." Meet the uthor/artist and view a selection of the watercolors from the book. The art will remain on display through December 6. Our hours are Monday - Friday 10 am-5:30 pm and on Saturday 12 - 4 pm.

The book includes roughly 75 of Marilynne’s watercolor images along with a detailed history of the site depicted. Preservation historian for St. Louis County, Esley Hamilton, has written the Forward to the book – and local historian, Ron Elz (aka “Johnny Rabbit”), contributed the Introduction.

Lynn Bozzay, co-owner of Grafica Fine Art says, “Marilynne is an absolute delight to work with as an artist and a real treasure trove of architectural history for St. Louis and the surrounding areas.” Eagle Bank has used Marilynne Bradley’s art in several of their locations. “We want our branches to feel like a bank and at the same time reflect our commitment to our clients and the local community” says Michael Walsh, President of Eagle Bank. “Marilynne’s work has great energy and life and allows us to select images that will make our clients feel at home with us.” When Eagle Bank was looking for that “local” touch their new Manchester branch, Marilynne knew that the building currently housing Manchester City Hall is on the National Register of Historic Places. That knowledge of history and architecture plus her skill as an artist resulted in a commissioned painting for Eagle Bank – and the citizens of Manchester.

Duane Reed Gallery: Friday, 12 September 2008

Mary Sprague: Trees
Kreg Kallenberger

The Duane Reed Gallery is pleased to present the latest works of acclaimed painter and draftsman, Mary Sprague, and the latest works of internationally acclaimed glass artist, Kreg Kallenberger. The exhibitions open Friday, September 12th with a reception to meet the artists that evening from 5 – 8 pm.

Sprague’s expansive repertoire of style and content has included notable studies of mysterious domestic interiors, vibrant equestrians, and expressive chickens with a certain amount of extra cluck. Trees features numerous spontaneous, yet beautifully rendered drawings of natural forms. These intimate sketches invite the viewer onto the scene of one of Mary’s many cross-country trips.

Kreg Kallenberger has worked primarily in glass for the past 35 years. He has explored a progression of series, each aiming to create forms that are sculpturally compelling, with the natural properties of glass serving that end rather than overwhelming the form. “Much of my most recent work has focused on the theme of landscape. I have attempted not only to convey a visual image but also to express and suggest the experience of the landscape. These pieces have been inspired by such dramatic environments as the ice-encrusted mountains of Greenland and the red-rock towers of Sedona, Arizona, as well as the quieter landscape of the Osage Hills near my home.

Howard Jones was an intensely brilliant artist and even in the rambunctious 1950s, '60s and '70s was a maverick and an innovator. He was part of the Art and Technology Movement along with Nam June Paik, Le Parc, Takis, Uecker and others. He worked through various artistic phases, including abstract expressionism, op and pop, but settled finally on creating work that harnessed technology for genuinely authentic artistic ambitions. Jones's use of light and sound, separately and simultaneously, was far in advance of his time. Many works survive and they are endowed with a special aura of prophesy. This current exhibition brings a group of Jones's paintings and constructions that employ lights as media and metaphor. As art historian, Udo Kulterman said of his work, "Technology was never a goal for Howard Jones - it was a vehicle he used to express changing perceptions of reality in a continuously poetic and artistic manner." The work in the show is from the estate of th e artist and on loan from private collections. "Memory and Refraction" runs concurrently with the concluding weeks of "Dan Flavin: Constructed Light" at the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, which is located directly across the street from the Bruno David Gallery.

Exhibit Opening – Three Dimensions of Expression: Mind on Clay Matter

Opening Reception Friday September 12, 5–8
September 5–October 26, 2008

The three artists showcased in this exhibition are, Victor Spinski, Newark, DE; Joe Bova, Santa Fe, NM; and Roy Strassberg, Davidson, NC. All three are leading artists in the clay medium, exhibiting a mastery of the material and a strong conceptual basis for their work.

Three Dimensions of Expression is curated by James Tanner, a clay artist himself, who has known each of the artists for over thirty years. “Each (of the) artists share a fierce energy, and are rebels of their own brand reflecting strong individual attitudes toward life, moving ideas forward, asking questions and suggesting potential” says Tanner. He also states “Strassberg’s work is inspired from the Holocaust, Spinski’s creations are seductive, poetic and deceptive and Joe Bova’s works are filled with mystery.” Executive Director, Boo McLoughlin states, “Three Dimensions of Expression: Mind on Clay Matter surprises the viewer with the vast range of clay to convey narrative content and plastic form. It is hard to fathom that Joe Bova’s mystic animals are made from the same material as Victor Spinski’s industrial tools or Roy Strassberg’s echoing bones. Their work is by turns humorous, playful and forceful in its commentary on the human condition."

Running concurrently, through August 24 in the David and Jacqueline Charak Gallery, Inside/Out: A profile of Awareness, James L. Tanner solo exhibition. Tanner is known for his abstract reliefs in which the human face is the central element. “I use the human image of the face as a vehicle to suggest psychological, emotional and spiritual being beneath the surface of a masked landscape” says Tanner.

The exhibition, organized by the Orange County Museum of Art, includes a jazz lounge; a media bar with film, animation, and television programming; a period art gallery of hard-edge abstract paintings; selections of art, architectural, and documentary photography; and an interactive timeline that presents a snapshot of California, national, and international culture and history of that era.Birth of the Cool examines the dynamic community of artists who overlapped and interacted in Southern California at midcentury--Chet Baker, Miles Davis, Gerry Mulligan, Charles and Ray Eames, John Lautner, Richard Neutra, Helen Lundeberg, and others who played a seminal role in the development of the iconic high modernist style.

The Light Project: opening September 4th, from 6-9pm

Join us next Thursday as we celebrate the opening of the Light Project, a series of outdoor light installations presented in conjunction with the current exhibition, Dan Flavin: Constructed Light and organized in collaboration with the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Saint Louis Art Museum, and White Flag Projects.

The Grand Center neighborhood will be illuminated by four different artworks, each of which is conceived by an artist (or artist team) and utilizes light in uniquely different ways.

Ann Lislegaard's work Crystal World (by J.G. Ballard), is a dual-projection video installation which will be projected on the back of the Pulitzer building.

Rainer Kehres and Sebastian Hungerer's work, CHORUS, will be installed in the burned church on Spring Avenue. It consists of 289 lamps donated by the St. Louis community, which will recreate the missing roof of the church and illuminated with colored lights at night. Photos of the donors with their lamps, along with the stories behind them, can be found online here.

Jason Peters's work, Untitled, is a sculpture of over 1,000 buckets fitted together and snaking through scaffolding in the grassy lot across the street from the Pulitzer. The buckets are internally lit, giving off a warm glow at night.

Spencer Finch's artwork, Sunset (St. Louis, July 31, 2008), includes solar panels installed on the roof of the Contemporary Art Museum, which will power a soft-serve ice cream machine on the sidewalk. The ice cream will be the color of the St. Louis sunset and give out for free.
