PSTL Window Gallery: Friday, 18 April 2008

John Sarra's exhibit SAD SMILES AND TEARS OF JOY will be on display at PSTL Window Gallery through April 19. Please join us for a special closing reception on Friday, April 18, 5pm-7pm.

Riverfront Times by Malcolm Gay: John Sarra: Sad Smiles and Tears of Joy What elevates these traditional still life paintings isn't so much Sarra's fine sensitivity to form and light; it's the artist's sense of place. Sarra's subjects arise as unintentional compositions of tools, toys and other domestic objects that have coalesced and dispersed during the nearly ten years he has been renovating his St. Louis home. The paintings feature smaller spaces that temporarily exist in the space of his house. While the bulk of the show is devoted to still lifes, Sarra also is exhibiting an orienting painting: a landscape near his family's property. To accentuate the singularity of space, Sarra has also constructed a walkway to enter the minute Window Gallery, making viewers aware of the distance and height at which they are seeing the paintings. Through April 19 at PSTL Window Gallery at Pace Framing, 632 North Grand Boulevard; 314-531-4304 (www.paceframing .com). Hours: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tue.-Sat.

Making art is as much an act of escapism as exploration for me. My frequent state of dissatisfaction with a current location or situation fuels my creative drive. I draw inspiration from my time spent in foreign lands, my longing to embark on new adventures, and my views on societal conceptions. By internalizing experiences in my life, they brew inside until through past memories, present discontent, and desires for the future I create something new. --Julia Holyfield

U R B A N F O S S I L Cast Paper Artifacts by John Tuccillo
&
E N S E M B L E a group exhibition with works on view by Joe Chesla, Rebecca Eilering, Leslie Holt, Ken Konchel, David Lancaster, Metra Mitchell, Jeff Palmer, Stan Trampe, David Wallace, Rebecca Trawick, and Lin Xu.

MORE ABOUT URBAN FOSSIL... Unearthing 21st Century Relics all made of paper

John Tuccillo finds inspiration for his sculpture at his feet! Paying tribute to natural and industrial forms residing in the urban landscape, from the detailed metalwork of sewer grates, manhole covers and time shifted concrete, to organic inclusions of tree stumps, roots and rock, Tuccillo creates a 21st century museum of artifacts, painstakingly recreated in paper pulp.

He begins by making a urethane mold directly off of the street, then casts the mold in archival paper. The artist focuses on manhole covers, sewer grates, and other elements of a manipulated environment, as primary subjects for his creative work, as both personally expressive motifs, and as contemporary artifacts, both functional and decrepit. As highly illusionistic works, his paintings are often mistaken for "ready-made" pieces; ordinary objects that are appropriated by the artist from their functional context and presented as-is, in the gallery environment. His intent is precisely the opposite. Through the materials and process, he is re-creating the world around him, faithfully approximating the appearance of the subject rendered, and taking care to blur the distinction between art and reality as much as possible.

EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF/GOD AGAINST ALL
Curated by Hesse McGraw
This Saturday evening, March 15, 7-10 PM

Featuring artists Tim Hyde, Jill Magid, Lilly McElroy, Eric von Robertson, Zachariah Rockhill, and Marco Boggio Sella

Every Man For Himself/God Against All is concerned with the state of being out of place and the process of becoming a stranger. The artists and films included highlight both the experience of the stranger and the native. The spaces explored by these artists are often contested and their works celebrate the tension between belonging and the unexpected guest. It¹s irrelevant whether one perceives these places as arrival or departure, these works strip hierarchy, defer the right to property, blow out the boundaries of the city and forgive urgently. There is no hubris, only complete reciprocation and rampant trespassing. Every Man For Himself/God Against All seeks out spaces actively trespassed and forgiving of trespassers.

The Ides of March with Robert Longyear Presented by Craft Alliance

Exhibit Opening & Reception: Friday March 14, 5-8 PM

Craft Alliance presents The Ides of March: Sculptural Brooches Inspired by the Landscape of River des Peres. By using various metals and concrete, Metalsmith Robert Longyear offers a glimpse into the basement of St. Louis. His creative process involves engaging the river through photography, site specific works, and finally reflecting the imagery within the brooches he presents in this exhibit.

“I take material and engage it in a way that makes the work rough, but managed, manipulated, made. It’s not that I could take any object out of the world and make it into a brooch. I take the dynamic, the idea, the viral quality of the materials and have used them as a formulated method in jewelry,” states Robert Longyear.

Robert will be on hand for the public opening reception on March 14, 5-8 pm; the exhibit will run through March 30th. Admission to the opening and exhibition is free.

Bruno David Gallery: Friday, 14 March 2008

Please join us for an opening reception to preview the exhibition by LESLIE LASKEY
this Friday March 14, from 6 to 9 pm.

Bruno David Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition by Leslie Laskey. The exhibition is presented in three parts: PORTRAITS (Front Room), HINGE (Main Gallery), WOODLAND SKETCHES (Project Room). In the New Media Room, an excerpt is on view of the documentary Forty-seven Views of Leslie Laskey directed and produced by Lulu Gargiulo and David Wild. View the online exhibition.

In the hit-or-miss world of contemporary art, longevity in itself is a virtue. Leslie Laskey’s lengthy biography can at times read like the artistic history of the 20th and 21st century. Now in his eighties, Laskey remains a working artist—and a central and enggaging one at that. Longevity is one thing, but combine that with integrity and a drive to continually advance contemporary art and you have an (St. Louis) artist who has long been in our midst and deserves our admiration.

Leslie Laskey demonstrates again that working in the studio is crucial to a creative mind and longevity. His new work explores and engages us in images found in things and places. Showing us how they work, finding sensuality in surfaces and rich mystifying colors. Laskey never separates his art from its viewer as he always engages them in the process of his work.

The gallery is located at 3721 Washington Boulevard, in the heart of the Grand Center arts district, directly opposite The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, and in close proximity to the Sheldon Art Galleries, The Fox Theatre, and Powell Symphony Hall. The gallery is open free to the public and the hours are 10 AM to 5 PM Wednesdays through Saturdays, and by appointment.

Duane Reed: Friday, 4 April 2008

The Duane Reed Gallery is excited to present the works of painter and mixed media artist Ken Anderson and of painter Ronald Christ. The exhibitions open Friday, April 4th with a reception to meet the artist that evening from 5 – 8 pm.

Anderson’s current body of work is influenced by textiles from around the world and
consists of dimensional low relief abstract wood assemblages. He uses a reductive
landscape-referenced palette applied with both paints and stains. His artistic intent has to do with transformation, rebirth, and discovery of beauty in the unexpected. Color
and pattern play an important role in his works to create dynamic, energetic motion.
“I have always had a great interest in textiles. My own collection includes Navajo
blankets and rugs, Guatemalan huipils, West African textiles, and African American
quilts like those from Gee’s Bend. I split pine planks and then paint and stain the
pieces that are then reassembled on a backing board. As I experiment with arranging
and rearranging the strips in abstract configurations, woven or pieced textile like
pattern starts to take shape. In the studio, I focus on the abstract formal relationships that balance visual elements like musical notes into an improvisational assemblage. These roughly cut pieces of wood and my use of a limited earthy palette hint at landscape and the natural world as well. It is the juxtaposition of hard and soft as well as the juncture where improvisation meets formal concern that I find most compelling.”

Influenced by the works of master artists such as Giorgio de Chirico and Piero della
Francesca, Ron Christ’s paintings combine elements of the abstract and the very real to
create places he say are, “possible but not probable.” His works deal with themes of
fate, chance, choice, cause, reason and change. Since 1991 Christ’s paintings have
been influenced by aspects of environments experienced, studied and documented in
Italy combined with images of his own invention. “It is important that the paintings
have some connection to actual physical and experiential reality, but also a somewhat
dreamlike, metaphysical and surreal quality.”

Gallery hours: Tuesday through Friday 10-5pm, Saturday 12-4pm.

Snowflake: Friday, 14 March 2008

Opening Friday night at Snowflake, March 14, 7-10 pm.

Cary Horton examines odd juxtapositions of context, objects, fact, fantasy, architectural and organic elements through a series of photographs that plays with traditional film techniques. "As humans leave more and more of a mark on nature, what is natural seems to be almost absurd and out of place, such as seeing birds trapped in a Home Depot or a hawk hunting along the interstate. More and more, human contact with the actual natural world seems startling and pseudo-natural has become our authentic experience of nature, such as rock climbing indoors, audio CD's of "sounds of nature" etc." Cary makes an ink jet print directly onto traditional film negatives and then rescans the image. The final work is printed digitally.

In partnership with the St. Louis Earth Day organization, the theme of the exhibition was developed through an ongoing discussion with about their interest in adding a collaborative and artistic component that directly involves the community. The group of photographers represented in Grounded are among an intensifying, global movement of artists who are addressing environmental concerns and critically engaging in issues like climate change, extinction, conservation, environmentally sensitive building and planning and waste management and believe that art can play a critical role in providing creative insight into these challenges. Morton J. May Foundation Gallery: Thursday, 13 March 2008

Maryville University's Morton J. May Foundation Gallery is pleased to present the second of the BFA Studio Art Exhibitions. A Marriage of… Materials, Mediums, and Memories is an exhibit by artist Allison Bruenger. The exhibit runs March 10 - 14 with a reception Thursday March 13, 6-9pm.

Memories of the first time you kissed your first love, remembering the time you spent with your siblings at Christmas, or the way your mom and dad smiled from ear to ear at your graduation. These are just some of the memories that help shape who you are as a person and as an artist. "A Marriage of... Materials, Mediums, and Memories" is a collection of visions from the past with concepts from the present. This show is a combination of material and disciplines that use metals, ceramics and mixed media. Even though these mediums are wonderful on their own, together they lend themselves to create ways to explore nature, beauty, and memories that stir up emotions and inspire joy in the viewer.

Gallery is located in the Donius University Center
