Gale Davis: People Will Know What Kind of People You Are

In this series of drawings, St. Louis native Gale Davis pulls from a multifaceted background in illustration, interior design, and bouncing at local bars. The results are hybrids - equal parts drawing, pattern play, and subversive character development. The pieces revolve around two social tropes - the "peacock" and the "mummy" - that will resonate with anyone who has ever observed the farce of urban nightlife.

Jonathan Lisenby: People Empyrean

Jonathan Lisenby sets the stage for Gale Davis' character drawings with new "backdrop" paintings. The series focuses and expands on Davis' "mummy" as setting as well as character. Lisenby's empty outlines reveal the "mummy" as deathly and heavenly environment. Resembling coloring book pages with thick black outlines and oddly still, floating compositions, these paintings create a forceful imaginative space where the characters and viewer mingle.

Laurel Lukaszewski: Mutable/Mutability

Opening Reception Friday, February 29th 5 – 8 pm
February 29 – March 29, 2008

Although frequently mistaken for metal Laurel Lukaszewski’s spontaneous, yet graceful works are actually individually extruded and installed pieces of porcelain and black stoneware, which she has been exploring for the last three years. Resembling three-dimensional line drawings or calligraphic brushstrokes, Laurel’s installations are created by interlocking individual coils one top of another to create hanging, freestanding or wall-mounted sculptures. The idea of interconnectedness evident in the work is based upon the artist’s, “habit of incessant doodling and study of Japanese Buddhist mandalas in graduate school, although the works themselves do not replicate any religious imagery.”

Laurel’s approach to the work, being recreated anew with every installation, gives the work a spontaneous, random quality. “…No piece is every exactly the same as it once was. For me, this mutability is a fascinating and important aspect of the work. Each time I install a piece, I must pay attention to its environment and take into consideration how it will inhabit the world around it. Whether it is taking advantage of an architectural element or reacting to the way that shadows play upon the piece, it is important to realize that it will only exist as it is in the present.”

Larry Fodor: Stochastic 2

Opening Reception Friday, February 29th 5 – 8 pm
February 29 – March 29, 2008

“A mark of paint, a decision, a choice; all are effected by their surrounds. They also affect their surrounds. A horizontal stroke of blue paint bisecting a vertical ochre stroke modifies both in their interaction, just as a particular experience can transform a person. Paint applied to a canvas, like experience, seeks and alters awareness, discovery, or questions. Continually successive combinations of moments, decisions, and marks gather to build a painting or enrich an individual Perchance, in the course of this movement, this sustained action and these continual marks, there comes a revealing of what lies beneath the surface: a center or core steadily accumulating an infinite variety of experience. Perception is illuminated, if only for a moment, yet altered ever after.” Larry lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Sara Paula Hoffman: The Nora Project

Opening reception, Friday, February 15, 5:30-8pm
Exhibition February 15 - March 7, 2008

Hoffman's psychologically-inspired oil paintings explore Midwestern girlhood and are influenced by the plays of the Norwegian Modernist, Henrik Ibsen. She creates visual theater on a two-dimensional stage in these paintings, drawings and works in progress, which are based on Ibsen's A Doll's House and Ghosts.

Ibsen's dramas investigate the roles of women caught in the web of Victorian expectations; Hoffman's work follows these threads into contemporary society. The play A Doll's House traces the awakening of Nora from a life of unexamined domestic comfort and male domination to her abandonment of marriage and three children, a choice which outraged audiences in 1879. Ibsen's Ghosts conversely portrays the tragedy of a woman who does not leave an oppressive domestic situation but whose 'security' ultimately extracts a much higher price than leaving would have.

Talk to Me: The Voices of Kiln-Formed Glass will focus on work that has developed by drawing on life, time, and experience. Each object showcased is a vehicle that voices an inner self. Glass that is cast or fused in a kiln is referred to as “kiln formed”. Unlike blown glass or glass worked directly from the furnace, kiln forming is an indirect method of shaping allowing for delicate details and complex imagery.

WILDWOOD PRESS presents Casey Rae | Water
at Des Lee Gallery

Artist Reception Friday February 15, 2008, 6-9pm
February 1 thru March 2, 2008, Tuesday-Sunday 1-4pm

In her series Water, Casey Rae captures the sweeping horizon lines of the icescapes of the Great Lakes in winter. Each print is a large scale giclee image, formatted to capture the visceral and haunting first impressions of the vastness of these bodies of water in their winter isolation. They speak to the power of nature, the power of the camera.

Casey Rae is a native St. Louisan. Her earlier photographic work includes a more ephemeral American landscape, isolating the surfaces and colors—fleeting glimpses of carnival lights, the slick surfaces and vibrant colors of hot cars.

Gallery at the Regional Arts Commission: Friday, 8 February 2008

Our Commodity: Juan William Chávez, Sarah Frost and Leslie Mutchler
Friday, February 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
at The Gallery at the Regional Arts Commission (RAC).

This opening also marks the debut of our newly refurbished first floor, so plan to stop by and celebrate with us!

Curated by Shannon Fitzgerald, the exhibition includes sculpture, installation, video, collage and drawing by Juan William Chávez, Sarah Frost and Leslie Mutchler. The three artists explore multiple themes in their art, but find common ground in the investigation of the place art occupies in a world defined by consumerism of goods and ideas.

Chávez captures social situations in drawings that he produces at the spot. "The adrenalin of live drawing helps me connect and participate with the subject's social experience," says Chavez. While Chávez focuses mostly on situations, Frost and Mutchler address the more tangible aspect of our consumer society. Frost's work "examines our culture through the collection of its remains, such as discarded consumer objects." Through her collages, video, drawings, and installations, Mutchler investigates consumer desires to purchase an organized lifestyle. Her digital drawings of cabinets and shelving systems are fragile and robust at the same time - evidence of the dichotomy in her work as the storage systems "grow in response to collection, yet strive to minimize such expansion."

The exhibition runs through March 23, 2008.

The Gallery at the Regional Arts Commission, located on the first floor of the Cultural Resource Center, is committed to exhibiting the work of local artists and fostering opportunities for curators living in the St. Louis region.
