SLCC Meramec Gallery: Friday 2 March 2007

March 2 - April 13, Hirokazu Fukawa Installation

Opening Reception, Friday, March 2nd at 5:30-8pm
Artist's Lecture by Hirokazu Fukawa: March 1, 12-1 in HE: 131
Curator's Talk by Joe Chesla: April 12, 5 pm in the Gallery

Ethereal and haunting, Fukawa's installations often focus on shared systemsof communication and their failure to convey intended messages. Born in Tokyo in 1954, Fukawa studied social science at Waseda University. His later experience of the Canadian wilderness contrasted strongly with his urban life and led to new conceptual and spiritual works of art utilizing salt, florescent light, logs, mirrors, text and video monitors, among other media. His work has been exhibited at many museums and galleries in Japan, the US and Europe.

Examples of his work can be seen at www.fukawa.org

Bruno David Gallery: Friday, 20 April 2007

In the main gallery and in the New Media Room: Cité des Arts: Mixed Media by Yvette Drury Dubinsky

Opening Reception Friday, April 20 from 6 to 9 pm (Exhibition: April 20 – May 19, 2007)

Dubinsky presents monotypes on paper, large chromogenic prints of organic forms and a new multi-media installation of photographs (and music) made in France on the Paris Metro. All three bodies of work were inspired during her three months in France. The musical collaboration was done with Axel Singer, a composer from Munich, Germany while Dubinsky and Singer were both residents at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris in the Spring of 2006. This collaboration was initially presented in a concert at the Cité des Arts in Paris in October.

In the Project Room, Lindsey Stouffer will show her Skin sculptures. Her work combine steel structures and expanded tensile membranes (skin made from hosiery). The two elements (steel and hosiery) are put in situations where they struggle to occupy the same space. The skin is expanded into the steel or the steel clamps on to the skin. During this process, necessary adaptations take place and both elements are changed.

"Let's Intimate"
An Installation by artists Karen Lederer and Heidi Turpin
Opening reception 6-9pm

Through the installation, "Let's Intimate" Karen Lederer and Heidi Turpin create a Valentine's day party gone too personal. They explore the differences between the superficial intimacy of store bought valentines, love songs, party decorations, and fake flowers vs. the true intimacy of
what one actually feels inside. The artists display their desire to be close to the viewers by revealing information about themselves and offering up their phone numbers, but also exhibit their fear of intimacy and of winding up alone forever.

Hoffman LaChance Contemporary: Friday, 23 February 2007

Hoffman LaChance Contemporary is proud to announce the opening of the exhibition CLUE: A Photographic Interpretation by Hope Edwards. Twenty One photographs will comprise the show, each based on a different element from the classic whodunit board-game, Clue.

Throughout this suite of photos, there is a pictorial and narrative richness that is lent clarity by Hope Edwards technical savvy and careful cultivation of each of the set-ups. The images are sharp and saturated, stunning and quirky; her work is soaked with realism, imagination and tongue in cheek humor. With sly nods and winks to the viewer, the work refers back to it’s unifying theme and to the history of the medium itself.

Join us for the opening reception with the artist this friday from 6 till 10 in the evening. Good food and drinks provided.

GALLERY TALK: Paper Working Artists
Friday, February 23, 1:00 pm, Hunt Gallery

Visitors to France, interested in contemporary art are often surprised and delighted when they see an exhibition of works by artists who do not figure in big museum shows or exchanges. They
have the pleasure of discovering themes and ways of working that are different from those found in the United States. Despite the ease of international travel and the internationalization of certain art concepts, works of art are still influenced by cultural traditions and ways of seeing. Paper Working is a cultural visit to Paris where an American audience in the St. Louis area can have an opportunity to compare, contrast and enter a world they would have little access to
unless they travel to France. In a world of virtuality, here are four artists of different origins, backgrounds and horizons; living and working in Paris and who share a common interest in working with paper as their artistic medium.. Whether medium or surface, paper takes on a new life, whether in the form of a book, shaped and sculpted into paper maché, or cut and glued into a collage. Paper Working is paper doing "its own thing."

Lectures, exhibition & reception are free and open to the public.
These events are supported by the Department of Art and are free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Art Office at: (314) 968-7171, or email joness@webster.edu

New Paintings: Amy Enkelman–Reed and Steven Wise

February 24 – June 30, 2007

This exhibition pairs works by St. Louis based artist Amy Enkelmann-Reed with Arkansas-based artist, Steven Wise. Graduate school classmates, Enkelmann-Reed and Wise both find affinity in bright colors and animated forms. In her paintings and drawings, Enkelmann-Reed deals with memory, nature and color relationships, weaving images from natural world within layers of painterly abstraction and patterned settings. Wise’s colorful compositions are created by the artist using a system of prescribed restrictions, formal limitations and themes, with an emphasis on material, texture and surface.

Amy Enkelmann-Reed studied art at The University of Oregon in Eugene, and at the Philadelphia College of Art. She earned her MFA in painting and printmaking from the University of Iowa. Her works have been exhibited in Chicago, Kansas City, Iowa City and St. Louis. Currently an Adjunct Faculty member at Webster University in Drawing and Design, her work exists in numerous private collections from Chicago to the California coast. Wise received his MFA from the University of Iowa, a B.A. from Swarthmore College and he also studied at Tyler School of Art, Temple University. His works have been exhibited in Missouri, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Tennessee and in England.

Project ImagiNeighborhood

February 24 – June 2, 2007

Since 1982, the North St. Louis Arts Council, headed by program manager Larry Clark, has promoted the discovery and development of artistic expression and talent with a wide range of community stakeholders. Partnering with schools and community groups, the North St. Louis Arts Council uses the arts to foster community identity and pride. Through Project ImagiNeighborhood, teams of photographers and writers have worked with neighborhood youth in a collective process to transform perceptions about the communities in which they live. The program has united the arts in everyday life with grassroots efforts in community stabilization and development.

Project ImagiNeighborhood captures the reflections and impressions of urban youth who have taken part in workshops which teach them practical photography and writing skills. The project is designed to foster new and positive relationships among neighbors across age, ethnicity, and income. The exhibition at the Sheldon Art Galleries brings together examples of work done by Project ImagiNeighborhood students from the last 10 years and celebrates the people and communities that have helped to create this unique and valuable document.

Leon Hicks: Iconic Caper/Dancing

February 24 – June 30, 2007

Printmaker, virtuoso draughtsman and Professor Emeritus in the Art Department at Webster University in St. Louis, Leon Hicks has for over 40 years exhibited works that are at once aesthetically beautiful and conceptually complex. A student of art history, Hicks has studied and taught the line techniques of Rembrandt van Rijn, Pablo Picasso and the printmaking techniques of Rembrandt, Albrecht Dürer and Mauricio Lasansky, among others, but has also studied modern computer technologies and concepts since the 1970s. In this exhibition, Hicks presents a new body of work conceived as a conceptual allegory of dancing. Combining oilstick line drawings and rubbing on transparent, pastel-colored Japanese rice papers, the artist creates powerful single and overlapping outlines of dancing figures. These are installed in the gallery so that they hang and undulate with the passing movement of the viewer. Playful and beautiful, Hicks iconic images evoke the energy of expressive action.

Hicks has a M.F.A degree in printmaking and an M.A. in painting from the State University of Iowa and a B.S. in painting and sculpture from Kansas State University. He also studied Art History at Stanford University, La Romita School of Art and Atlanta University. He has exhibited nationally and internationally at numerous institutions including Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, Alabama State University, Montgomery, Alabama; University of Hawaii, Hilo and at the United States Embassy, Ankara, Turkey, among others. His works are in the collections of the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa; Charleston Art Gallery, Charleston, West Virginia, Oakland Art Museum, Oakland, California; the Saint Louis Art Museum and the Library of Congress, Washington D.C., among others.

Energetic art suspended in a peaceful space

Color + Texture + Energy = a Plethora of Color Narratives Influenced by Current Events, Popular Culture & Abstract Expressionism

This collection of paintings incorporates years of experimentation investigating the narrative capabilities of non representational surfaces invigorated by raking, rubbing, gouging, and troweling thick and luscious oil paint onto the surface. By mixing colors on the canvas as opposed to the palette each swipe creates a unique combination of color and texture that never repeats.

The Fragile Girl Series focuses on realistic and abstract images that fuse glamour, humor and drama to create an eerie seduction for the viewer to experience the vulnerability of a seemingly composed girl.

See www.sjhammack.com <http://www.sjhammack.com> for a preview of her work.

WHOOP DEE DOO beating dead horses Feb. 9 - Mar. 3rd, 2007
A traveling exhibition of Kansas City artists.

Opening reception: Friday, February 9th 6:30 - 10pm

On view Saturdays 10-5 and Sundays 12-5 until March 3rd. For other times please contact Boots for an appointment.

Boots Contemporary Art Space is proud to bring together a collection of young artists working on the very forefront of exciting and energizing contemporary art, curated by Boots agent Jon Peck. This show originated in Miami with the works of 22 Kansas City artists, co-curated by artist Jaimie Warren. In Miami, the exhibition was installed in a salon like fashion with works hanging on walls and displayed on pedestals. Several months later it returned to Kansas City where curator Jaimie Warren took an innovative approach to re-presenting the exhibition to a broader audience. The gallery was used as a stage and the artworks articulated the set. Throughout the night people of all ages we entertained by performances and spectacles that varied dramatically, but were tied together by their high levels of energy and seemingly wholesome and innocent spirit. With help from local artists Chloe Schempf, Jori Sackin and Matt Roche "Whoop Dee Doo" has become a monthly performance extravaganza featuring various performances and skits from a wide range of participants. The eccentric stages are modeled after late-night shows like "Chic a-go-go,""American Bandstand" and "Soul Train." The performances, which seek to connect a wide range of people, draw from informed and spontaneous participants to create a natural sense of both awkwardness and accessibility. The event includes a live taping with audience participation welcome. White Flag’s fourth regular exhibition, DEAN KESSMANN: Plastic on Paper will open February 24 and continue through March 31.

Kessmann’s large-scale photographs of common plastic shopping bags are utterly transformative, replacing their subject’s inherent ubiquity with a sense of grandeur and timelessness. In his essay, “On Inventing Our Own Art”, Ibram Lassaw describes the attitude being formed by artist’s of his generation: “They feel that the important thing for art is to be alive, to be full of suggestion and possibilities, to enlarge our sensibility and to intensify experience….” It is precisely this synergy that becomes apparent in the work of these new Chicago photographers. Free Rein / Full Play is an exhibition that attempts to explore this phenomena, to capture this energy, with a combination of fantasy and performance, whether it utilize the body, object, or material. Although each work maintains its conceptual individuality, this association of freedom and playfulness produces a common uninhibited conceptual approach, which is enhanced by the photographic medium. Lassaw also suggests: “The artist no longer feels that he is ‘representing reality’, he is actually making reality… Reality is something stranger and greater than merely photographic rendering can show.” This is apparent in the collection of works by these artist’s, each of them produces images that in some ways, reveals a subconscious effort at Lassaw’s idea of a “new reality”. Free Rein / Full Play is a small, but concentrated attempt of capturing a spirit of art-making, in this case Chicago, and one that continues in its claim of “endless opportunity”.

The Ellen Curlee Gallery is located at 1308A Washington Avenue in the Washington Avenue loft district. Hours are 11am to 4pm Tuesday-Saturday and 11:00am to 9pm on First Fridays, the first Friday of each month. Tel: (314) 241-1299
